あらすじ・解説

She’s chasing a killer. He’s watching her every move.

He hides in the shadows, waiting for the perfect moment. Each kill is calculated, planned and executed like clockwork.

Struggling to balance her personal and professional life, young DS Becca Vincent has landed the biggest case of her career - and she knows that it will make or break her. But she can’t catch the culprit alone. Together with facial recognition expert Joe Russell, she strives to get a lead on the elusive murderer, who is always one step ahead of them.

Time is not on their side. The body count is rising, and the attacks are striking closer and closer to home. Can Becca and Joe uncover the connection between the murders before the killer strikes the last name from his list?

Great story line but

Got really tired of the pissing and moaning of the characters. After thr fifth time time pissing and moaning of how bad she or he felt got really
stale. But great plot just ease up on the whining

Ugh. Terrible story.

Horrible characters and terrible story. Unrealistic in the extreme. Like something written by a high school student who’s trying to be hip. Save your money!

I have many issues with this

I've read all of his books. This is the one to skip. Her narration is breathy and odd. The plot is strange and makes little sense.

I wanted to give up after the department of super sighters or whatever it was. I know authors are required for some reason to make characters a little flawed but I mean. This is every character having trauma in their past. It drives me crazy now, there were drunk drivers, rent boys, parental abuse, missing sisters, dead sisters, dead families. That's just for 3 characters.

Read any of his other books especially if it's a first listen

Narrator Elizabeth Knowelden lisps and whispers

John Marrs is an excellent writer. His stories are beautifully developed and creepy and interesting and twisty and so very original!! I will buy a book just seeing his name on it. But this narrator!! She is so offensive to my ear, I had to stop listening. I kept thinking this would get better but no, it never did, I skipped ahead hoping the whisper/lisp was for a reason but no, that's just the way she reads. Listening to a sample does not help as you think this way of speaking is for maybe a person hiding and whispering. This came free with an Unlimited book so I didn't pay but I am still so disappointed as I just love Marrs's books and was looking forward to a great listen.

What a serial killer is all about . . . The bad and the worst

You know the who, the how and the why!! A true twisted soul who puts the blame on everyone else, indeed, the six people he killed! The story was great even if I didn’t like what happened! I felt the protagonist’s pain and I cried, first time in a long time reading (listening) to a book!
The performance was good, but could have used more varied voices!
Overall a great book, but sure can’t see a sequel out of this one!

Exhausting

I read a few of Marrs's book and liked them all very much. This one is a disaster. Very different writing style, very much resembles a TV crime show, generic and hard to follow. I just couldn't get into the story and both characters and plot were boring. I was hoping that by mid book it would finally get interesting but it was terrible all the way to the end. I'm really disappointed with this one and I hope his other books are not like this one.

A serial killer story

Set in London, this is the story of a unique serial killer with an agenda to not only get revenge on everyone responsible for the current state of his life, but recognition for his love for his family.

Wow!!!! I loved it!!! Totally Engaging!!!

I started listening to this book and was finished in a day and a half. The narrator's voice was well suited for the story and the story itself was great!!! It has all the components of a great mystery and suspense. I got some nice twists and turns which made me want to listen until the end just to find out what happens.

Irritating narrator

Have really enjoyed all of this authors previous books and the story of this seemed pretty good as well but sorry had to return as just found the narrative too distracting! She has a really self satisfied voice that just irritated me! Made the characters really hard to follow and unbelievable!

Good story. Awful narration. :(

I enjoyed the story enough to plough through the breathy affected narration. It was close though! Almost gave up a few times. But I've enjoyed all john marrs I've read, and did not want to miss this book.
This narration was awful. Every sentence delivered in a breathy dramatic way, whispering the last few words of each sentence. Noooo. I'm glad the book is finished to be honest. Shame shame shame.

Could Not Finish As Just A Bit Dark For Me ...

I loved two of John Marrs' most recent books (The One, When You Disappeared) and was excited to try this and did like the sound of it. Opened well, liked the characters, loved the idea of Super Recognisers, liked plucky Becky - but then it got a bit dark for me - plus the mention of animal cruelty albeit as in a backstory. to be honest it was not even the murders that made me want to stop listening - it was just too cheerless and brooding and perhaps as told from the killers POV at times, there were not the clues to follow as in other murder mystery thrillers so I felt more like a passenger than a detective.
I did think it was very well written and I will definitely try another John Marr's book but just, I suppose, but just a bit bleak for me as the killer was just so depressing and sick and the killings so cruel and undeserved - I found myself just not wanting to hear any more or really caring what happened next as I had had enough.
So a personal preference rather than a reflection on the excellent storytelling and interesting plot.
Loved the narration, I have enjoyed a few books read by Elizabeth Knowelden but never heard her be so compelling before and at times she sounded like a sexy alien or android which I thought added greatly to the brooding atmosphere and mystery.

Average really

I read everything by John Marrs and most have been 5 stars but sadly found this book predictable and hard work. Couldn’t connect with any of the characters.

This is the 2nd of Mars books for me. Will not be the last. The reviews were harsh on the narrator, however I liked her style

Twist and shout.

Oh I do love a good psychological thriller. I've read plenty of John's books now to know he can handle suspense just like Hitchcock.
With more twists than Lennon & Mcartney's Long and Winding Road, it's very easy to lose hours listening. All in a good way. Fans of John will lap it up. This is one of his earlier novels. Newcomers will enjoy it and hopefully look at his other works - The One being a particular highlight.
I've taken one star off the narration. While it is mostly excellent, there are times when Elizabeth appears to be advertising a Flake chocolate bar, her voice reduced to no more than a sultry whisper. But it doesn't distract from the job at hand.
I always look forward to John's books. Looking back at one is just as good.
Right, no more Beatles references. I've got a train to catch and I just got my ticket to ride. Bah!

Don't give up....its worth the whole read!

I nearly gave up on this by the third chapter as I couldn't engage with the story. I'm glad I stuck with it. As the story developes I found myself wanting to know why things were happening. The characters at first are a bit two dimensional, then suddenly they come alive and you want to know more about them. I have found this with other John Marrs books. They always start off quite bland and it's like he suddenly finds his story and bang....you don't want to put it down!Really enjoyed the story and the narration.
