ストーリー
Poet Ocean Vuong’s debut novel is a shattering portrait of a family, a first love, and the redemptive power of storytelling. On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Written when the speaker, Little Dog, is in his late 20s, the letter unearths a family’s history that began before he was born - a history whose epicenter is rooted in Vietnam - and serves as a doorway into parts of his life his mother has never known, all of it leading to an unforgettable revelation.

ストーリー
Tara Westover was 17 the first time she set foot in a classroom. Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, she prepared for the end of the world by stockpiling home-canned peaches. In the summer she stewed herbs for her mother, a midwife and healer, and in the winter she salvaged in her father's junkyard. Her father forbade hospitals, so Tara never saw a doctor or nurse. Gashes and concussions, even burns from explosions, were all treated at home with herbalism. Then, lacking any formal education, Tara began to educate herself. Her quest for knowledge transformed her.

批評家のレビュー
"This big, beguiling book has all the distinguishing marks of a Great American novel." (The Times, London)
"Mesmerizing.... Not since Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake has an author so exquisitely evoked what it's like to be an immigrant." (USA Today)
"Lee has updated the Victorian novel of progress to a postmodern, postfeminist world and imagined a character whose circumstances feel universal." (Chicago Tribune)
あらすじ・解説
In this One Book, One New York 2019 nominee from the author of National Book Award finalist Pachinko, the Korean American daughter of first-generation immigrants strives to join Manhattan's inner circle.
Meet Casey Han: a strong-willed, Queens-bred daughter of Korean immigrants immersed in a glamorous Manhattan lifestyle she can't afford. Casey is eager to make it on her own, away from the judgements of her parents' tight-knit community, but she soon finds that her Princeton economics degree isn't enough to rid her of ever-growing credit-card debt and a toxic boyfriend. When a chance encounter with an old friend lands her a new opportunity, she's determined to carve a space for herself in a glittering world of privilege, power, and wealth - but at what cost?
Set in a city where millionaires scramble for the free lunches the poor are too proud to accept, this sharp-eyed epic of love, greed, and ambition is a compelling portrait of intergenerational strife, immigrant struggle, and social and economic mobility. Addictively listenable, Min Jin Lee's best-selling debut Free Food for Millionaires exposes the intricate layers of a community clinging to its old ways in a city packed with haves and have-nots.

Worst narration ever
I've been listening to Audible for six years and I have not listened to a book where the narrator was this annoying. She read sentences with the emphasis on all of the wrong words to the point where it almost didn't make sense. I bought it because I LOVED Pachinko. But the narration in this book ruined it for me. It was almost as if the narrator were not an avid reader and didn't understand how people actually say things. She put the word emphasis in very strange parts of the sentence. It was distracting to the point that I had a hard time finishing the book.
Perhaps this is one of those cases where I would have been better off with a paper copy. Lesson learned.

This narrator is TERRIBLE!
I’m powering through because I love the story, but this narrator is the WORST. I can’t believe someone can ruin such a good book this way.
I really hope they can find a different narrator because she reads and puts emphasis on words that don’t need it, I can’t really describe it any other way, SHE IS TERRIBLE.
I’m finding it hard to follow because of getting so caught up on her annoying narration.

bad narration
The way the narrator read the book made it difficult to focus on the story. It got somewhat better later on but the way she spoke the Korean English was offensive and insulting to Koreans.

Good if you have nothing else to read
I was excited to start this book, Pachinko is one of my favorites so I had high expectations.
You'd never think those two books were written by the same person. And don't get me started on the lady reading the book, she was terrible.

Unbearable narration, just read the book
I can’t get through this book. The narration is unbearable. It’s an exhausting assault on your ears. Every other syllable is overemphasized and robotic. No one talks like that. The Korean English accent is insulting and sounds like an unfunny parody skit from a bygone racist era. Who signed off on this?

Melodramatic performance
I think I would have liked this book better if I read it. But the performance was melodramatic and it bothered me. Also the story was eh. Seemed like the author was looking to break Korean American stereotypes and to tell a general story. But because there was no real climax or resolution, I was disappointed.

Terrible narrator
Might be the worst narrator I’ve ever heard on an audible book. Inflection and tone was all off! I really enjoyed the story so I kept listening but it was cringeworthy!!

Another beautiful story by Min Jin Lee
I listened to this after loving Pachinko last year. Very different characters, another beautiful and complex web of stories, ambitions, and feelings. I loved the narrator, as well.
