あらすじ・解説

The race to control a newly discovered ancient alien technology threatens to tear civilization apart.

Master Sergeant Cole Shaw and his team of mech operators are on the front lines of the new war. But instead of mechs, they pilot bioengineered beasts called Sentinels. Only they can stop the Imperial Alliance from unleashing a devastating alien weapon with unparalleled power.

Shaw’s team is sent to a colony planet where rebels clash with government forces, intergalactic empires vie for influence in the shadows, and monstrous feral creatures wreak havoc in forests as deadly as they are beautiful. Amid the chaos, Shaw must make tenuous alliances with untrustworthy forces and face impossible decisions with catastrophic consequences. If he doesn’t succeed, then it’s not just his team’s lives at stake - it’s all of mankind.

Dreadnaught is the long-awaited second book in the Deadmen’s War series. Pacific Rim meets Starship Troopers in this thrilling military sci-fi series.

Another fun ride!

I'm always nervous going from the first book in a series that I liked to the second. So many ways an author can write themselves into a trap with a repetitive story, no new character development, or stale/common sci-fi tropes. If I like book 2 then I'm generally in it for the long haul. Thankfully, this book was excellent and I don't need to tell audible sci-fi fans that the narrator was the best, because we already know that. The fact R.C. Bray is narrating was the primary reason I purchased the first book, but the story is what kept me coming back!

It took me a minute to get back into the characters since my last listen, but they developed them well and I quickly fell back into step. Not a lot of time has gone by in the story, so our characters are still recovering from the events in Book 1. I won't spoil anything but here are my plus/deltas regarding this book.

Plus:
- A continuation of book 1 and didn't just recreate the same storyline on a different planet. We were entertained with excellent character development, primarily for Shaw, but the development for Tanaka, and Garcia surprised me the most. They weren't huge storylines, but the events will likely have huge impact moving forward. I had little feeling for Tanaka in book 1, but this story allowed me to connect with her and I felt her emotion. I look forward to seeing more of Shaw and Garcia! I also felt a little bad for Kross (whose name I had to look up) because he is basically ignored the entire book. I think it would be great to have the rest of the deadman get some story time.
- The way they described the planet and the deadman's struggle to acclimate to their new environment was awesome! So well done here... we are reminded they spent so much time in frozen tundra, and they are now flung into a jungle, rather dramatically. The obstacles they have to overcome really help push the story along and show just because they operate the Sentinels doesn't mean they are indestructible.
- Narration was top freakin notch! Love R.C. Bray and will literally try any book he narrates... he brought the main character to life!
- New characters and conflicts! We met a lot of new humans and a couple new governments/groups, which helped expand the universe and build on the story. This allowed for some good twists and turns along the way and plenty of juicy opportunity in the future.
- I liked how the story constantly moved, meaning we started out in a ship, in space, then another ship, then jungle, then caves, then volcano, then bunkers, etc.. It was constantly moving and kept things fresh. It's going to be hard to always do that, but the author did that well!

I have many more, but these were the ones that stick with me!

Deltas (An opportunity for change):
- I wasn't a fan of how Richie constantly harped on Garcia. In book 1 I felt Richie was compassionate (when not in combat), loyal, and faithful, but his treatment of Garcia really irritated me. I wanted to choke him out a couple of times, but I liked how the rest of the deadmen stuck up for her. This isn't really a con, hence why I use the term "Delta". Part of why the book is so good is the strong emotional response to character actions.
- The Deadmen can literally catch no break. It seems like a constant struggle and I felt exhausted. I would like to see them come out ahead sometimes. lol. Not that it doesn't happen, but it always seems one step forward two steps back.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed and will continue to purchase these audiobooks. I really like the universe and am truly curious as to what happens next! I would love to see a massive battle, with Mechs, Sentinels, and everything else with all the different factions! Fingers crossed we get that at some point.

Another Hit

This book was amazing start to finish. it was well worth the wait. The characters grew so much since the last book, you will love to hate some of them. The narrator is amazing, really sells them and brings them to life.

Story improved from first book

I almost didn’t buy the second book in the series due to how uninteresting the story was and how stereotypical the characters were. While I wouldn’t say the characters have improved much, they did. What shocks me the most is how much better the story has become. It’s certainly more compelling and cohesive than the first book. I’m looking forward to the third book’s release! Well done. But there’s still room for improvement. Please keep honing your craft Mr. Melchiorri. Maybe develop some of the characters even more? Most of the main characters are still pretty basic and underdeveloped.

Great Book 2 in new Series

Anthony J Melchiorri is quickly becoming a favorite author for me. This second book in a new series is really excellent.

I am going to go nuts waiting for book three!!!!!

The story is great, the action is great, and the narration shines!

Honestly, the is worth the cost alone for RC Bray's out takes. Had me nearly wetting myself! lol

The action continues!

Really good! Mechs, aliens, science, and RC Bray. The best combination I can think of. If you haven't started this series, what are you waiting for? It's a diamond on a beach of sand.

as always, RC Bray is great

but, sorry, the story didn't capture me. Not really SCIENCE fiction, more akin to fantasy fiction which I am not into. Science does not play even a minor role in this series.

The bloopers!!! 🤣

The story was amazing! Great plot twists, kept me on the edge of my seat, and it even occasionally tugged on my heart strings. I love the narrator (I have for a while) and the bloopers at the end were a golden surprise on my morning route to work! All in all I highly recommend.

Story continues...

Overall I have enjoyed the book and the storyline. Sometimes, however, I thought that too much detail went into describing the battles or certain situations that may have taken away from the main story. As always, great performance by R.C. Brey.

What’s with the artwork??

Ok, I know this should be about the book and the performance. Both were really good and plenty of action Bray was wonderful blah blah blah… What has really baffled me throughout this whole book (I listen in my car so the artwork is on the screen throughout) is what on earth is that big ass demo you looking thing on the front cover? I’m thinking the mech in front of it is a Doll?… It can’t be the titan as that had three heads… What is that thing??! Anyone? Please?

Fast Paced is an Understatement

It was a bit unbelievable any hero could take the pounding these guys did. How many times can you have searing pain from heat across your back before your skin flakes off. Just a bit over the top.
