あらすじ・解説

This haunting, unabridged reading from the original 1897 text, recounts with mounting suspense the nocturnal travels of a suspicious count from Transylvania. When Dracula first appeared, the work quickly earned a reputation as one of the first psychological novels of its day, and was noted for its use of new literary devices. Stoker, the business manager for the great tragedian, Sir Henry Irving, enlisted all the latest paraphernalia of his age to tell his unusual story: the portable typewriter, shorthand, the telegraph, and most important, the phonograph.

In his diary, Jonathan Harker dutifully records his journey to Castle Dracula. With ominous prescience, Harker expresses the hope that if anything terrible happens to him, Mina, his fiancée, will read it. The Harker sections are narrated by Alexander Spencer. His purposeful pace and subtle turns of phrase leave listeners with the sense of something sinister in the shadows. Susan Adams voices Mina and Lucy with sweet earnestness. As Mina’s journal unfolds and Lucy and Mina’s exchange of letters is read aloud, Adams keeps the ordinary amusing and the extraordinary, terrifying. Through excellent characterizations and credible dialogue, both narrators make this a fine fit for audio.
