The USA Today best seller!

"Kristoff effortlessly draws together multiple threads from the first two volumes and packs in plenty of wickedly sharp, beautifully choreographed, and gloriously bloody fight scenes while offering humor, heartbreak, and a few jaw-dropping surprises.... A poignant and exhilarating finale to a superb fantasy series." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

"The stakes for our heroine feel higher than ever.... Fans will love the fast-paced, epic conclusion to this dark and bloody tale." (Kirkus Reviews

"The twists and turns start early in this volume, and readers expecting wry humor and high body counts will not be disappointed.... Kristoff's characters are fully formed and jump off the page. The world building, borrowing its structure from Italian political history, remains as intricate and fascinating as it was in Nevernight (2016)." (Booklist)

Kinda disappointed

I feel like the story is a step down from the second book. The ending as huge of a scale it was is underwhelming and felt like an episode of dragon ball z or something similar. The constant 4th wall breaking about the foot notes was annoying. You can tell the author was really mad about people not liking the foot notes in the previous books. At one point he literally says "if you don't like the foot notes f#@k you. How about you write a book since you're an expert of literature". I didn't mind the foot notes at all till he kept pointing them out for a joke that got old the first time. Speaking of humor,I didn't find myself laughing like I did with previous books. None of the jokes were hitting.

I had a hard time enjoying most of the cast with the exception of a few(cloud was great). Ashlyn turn from a fun, independent, smart mouth assassin to a petty love sick puppy. Her whole character now is being Mia's girlfriend and never being anything else. A complete downgrade, which sucks since she was my favorite in the first two books. The sex scenes also overstay their welcome. Don't want to get into huge spoilers, but I do admit near the start of the book there are some great twist and turns with decent character development at the halfway point with some hyped action scenes sprinkled throughout. Overall Darkdawn is a disappointment especially by being the last book in the series. Audio book wise, the reader did a nice performance. His male voices were limited and there were a couple of times were he changed a character voice for a chapter or mix them up,but not bad.

The end

Well I am rather disappointed with the ending. It seems it was more about reiterating the past sayings. I guess I was just upset about Tric He deserved more

*Spoilers* I want to forget I ever read this

3.75 star. In all honesty I wish I never read this last tale. It was hard at first I love this seires so much and I didn't want it to come to an end. But the unfairness of the things that happened were too much for me. I could not enjoy this book the way I wanted too. Reading about my favorite character getting turned into a doormat was too heartbreaking to watch. I did however love the narrator Holter Graham. He brought life to the characters and the whispering dark was one of my favorite techniques he used. But it's going to be difficult to write this without spoilers so turn away now gentle friend.

Why? Why? Why bring Tric back I just don't understand I could have came to grips with him staying dead. I actually gave up hope in book 2 so it was fine. Tric went through so much and got treated less than trash by the one he went through hell for. His character felt like a third wheel the entire book and I could not come to terms with it. All the love and joy I had in the first book got repeatedly smashed over and over again. This boy clawed his way out of hell and she barely spoke to him. I was shattered. Ash who utterly destroyed his world constantly rubbing her perfect life in his face. And I really I don't want to curse the Author who apparently doesn't do happy ending yet somehow Ash gets hers so that seems fair.

I did not understand their relationship Ash and Mia. The only thing they had going was that they were so much alike. Tric even has a chance to kill Ash and yet he couldn't do that to the one he loved. Could Ash say the same? My heart actually hurts at the unfairness of it all. I wish he would have never returned Mia did not deserve him or anything for that matter after what she did. I understand they all kill innocents but if Tric would have did the same he would have never been forgiven. How can a book physically hurt you so much?

I'm so disappointed in this story I wish I would have stayed oblivious to what was actually going to happen and never went past book 1. But if I could get past these facts the story is still a great one. I love how the narrator speaks to you and jests. There is blood, favorites die, the world building is miraculous, and its everything I want in a book. The one liners are some of my favorites giving you a chill to your bones that only dark magic words can. Also the books in the library they read was an amazing twist. My mouth fell open at the words and I felt like I was glowing with love for this series.

This world became implanted in my heart and I fell for the characters as if they were my own
famiglia. The not cat and not wolf were as always some of my favorites enriching the story and making me want to have them for my own. The plot came with too many fillers though the scenes playing out for far to long. Especially the ending. It felt like an eternity because I got to far in and wanted it over with. I just want to forget now gentle friend I want to forget the hurt I feel.

Great Read but had issues

In the final installment, the story lived up to it's theme. There were plenty of twists, turns, heroics, and fighting. I did not like all of the scenes/ending but that was because I favored one character over another and they got screwed. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth for Mia. I couldn't understand her actions. Still don't. This was still a good read or listen really since I AudioBooked it. The AB had issues- very apparent voice-overs, repeated passages, and towards the end some of the voices were different. Overall however, I feel like Holter Graham did a great job. His delivery of the story really got me into it!

Pretty good ending to a great series. (No spoilers)

What can I say… Book 2 was so good it set an almost impossible bar. This was a good solid ending to a great series. Though I confess to being a little disappointed with the predictable, somewhat anticlimactic ending, it was nevertheless a satisfying end that answered most of your questions.

Darkdawn was probably on par with Nevernight, which was a great book. Godsgrave was just such a masterful nail-biter cliffhanger, whereas Darkdawn lost a bit of steam by the end of it.

Go into it with slightly lower expectations and you will probably love it. Expect it to top Godsgrave, and you might be disappointed.

That being said, if you liked the first two books you’d have to be an idiot not to read the third. Well worth the time – Just the ending was a bit blah. I confess I stayed up half the night listening to the end of Godsgrave, and I fell asleep thirty minutes before the end of this book.

If you liked this series I highly recommend The Res Sister by Mark Lawrence. Everything he’s written has been superb, but the parallels between the ancestor trilogy and nevernight are crazy. Equally enjoyable series, though I find Lawrence’s writing style to be far superior.

Whisper narration annoying

The story was good the normal narration was good. The whispering characters were so annoying it made my teeth itch. The producer gets negative stars for that choice. The narrator I’m sure did what he was instructed to do. REALLY REALLY BAD TECHNIQUE especially for long sections of narration!!!!

Masterpiece!

This has been a ride of a series to read, but it ended just as I could have hoped. Beautifully written. While I am sad it is over, it didn't leave me wondering or wanting more, which I do appreciate.

My New Favorite Author

Where to begin with this book, this series. It fed my soul when I needed it most. Not to be too cliche, but I laughed out loud, I ugly cried, and I couldn’t stop talking about it even with those who were clearly uninterested. Kristoff is my new favorite author, hands down. The characters are dark, flawed, and all the more endearing for it. The tale is bloody, tragic, and dramatically epic. I will now read every book my gentle friend has penned. All I can say is thank you for taking me on this journey in 2020. Goddess knows I needed it. Just. Read. It.

Predictable, pretentious, annoying

A predictable ending. Pretentious and annoying. I could barely make it through this book. *SPOILERS* Ashlyn becomes less than two dimensional and more harlot outside the video game brothel that can be interacted with. Mia does not end up with the person who truly loved her the most. If I had to hear "her girl" one more time I would have stopped listening to the book. If I had been reading the hard copy I would have skipped 2/3 of this book as unnecessary. This is the weakest and the worst of the Nevernight trilogy!

And Holter Graham, who I love to listen to, did you re-listen to the 1st two books before narrating the third? It is jarring to hear names and places pronounced a certain way in 2 books and then to have their pronunciation changed in the last book. It is especially jarring when listening to these 3 books back to back.
