あらすじ・解説

From the New York Times best-selling author of Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours comes an original, thrilling novel set in the universe of Star Trek: The Next Generation!

The past returns to haunt Captain Jean-Luc Picard - a crime he thought long-buried has been exposed, and he must return to Earth to answer for his role in a conspiracy that some call treason. Meanwhile, the USS Enterprise is sent to apprehend pirates who have stolen vital technology from a fragile Federation colony. But acting captain Commander Worf discovers that the pirates’ motives are not what they seem and that sometimes, standing for justice means defying the law....

A Great Book to jump back into Star Trek

David Mack is one of the best writers for Star Trek books and this is no different. I'll admit to being a little skeptical of jumping into an audiobook this far along in the timeline of Star Trek. I was worried that I couldn't understand what was going on and who the main players were now. BUT I was wrong. I did pick up this one because it was Captain Picard centric and I'm looking forward to the new series coming out in January 2020. A lot of the characters are new but I felt like I got to know them right away. And a quite a few were ones that we had previously seen on The Next Generation (and Voyager). The plot was dependent on earlier books with a focus on Tezwa and the then Federation President but the author gives you enough information to understand the events that are happening and you can then focus on the present moment and what IS actually going on. The narrator is also excellent - having done quite a few Star Trek books prior - so that made listening comfortable and interesting as he did plenty of modulation with his voice to distinguish between characters. All in all this was an excellent adventure and I know feel like I can jump back into the Next Generation timeline and enjoy more books in this range as long as Simon & Shuster and Audible continue to offer them!

David Mack & Robert Petkoff are great!

I have always enjoyed when Petkoff reads a MackStar Trek book! They did not disappoint in this book. Great way to know more about Picard and his crew. Very enjoyable story.

David Mack, always good

This was written by David Mack, in my humble opinion, the best Trek writer alive. It was beautifully read by Robert Petkoff. If you like Picard or TNG, you'll enjoy this book.

It was classic STNG. But not as much action.

More on personal story lines. Quite a lot of writing on the court trial against Piccard. More than 1/3 dedicated to this. Titan is a much better book. Especially if you like a lot of action fighting scenes.

Women Devolved in this Timeline?

I like a few Mack Trek books, but this one fell a little flat. Most of the women were either monolithic archetypes or petty, and few of them were admirable characters. I found the misogyny carried into the narration, but the writing leant itself to shallow, vengeful portrayals. Beverly Crusher was merely a support to Picard and had no meaningful lines. Better Trek to be had elsewhere.

Picard and Crusher...blech

Apparently I am not as big a Trekkie as I thought. I blinded myself like Oedipus to any allusions to them being interested in each other. Gross. Then there's the first person narrative. It could be an amazing story but I'm also not interested in hearing life through the eyes of someone who talks about a woman as being a tease. There's no way I'm sticking around to read he gets what he wants.

Wow!! Best ST audio-book I've ever listened to!

This really is a cut above most Star Trek novels. The story is utterly compelling, with amazingly well-drawn and fadcinating characters. You know the author must be something special if they can make Nausicaans seem sympathetic, and world-build them a believable and fascinating culture and back-story. I'm going to go back and find other David Mack ST novels because he's clearly an exceptionally talented author. I'm thinking back to the Garak novel, a Stitch in Time, for the last time I found one so compelling. Narration was excellent, as is always the case with Petkoff.

Brilliant and Spectacular Audiobook!!

The story of this audiobook is fabulous and original. The narrator was wonderful and sublime. His narration were clear, audible and easy to follow. Voices of the characters were done in a superb manner. I really enjoyed this Star Trek audiobook. The story was compelling to listen to and I was engrossed in the drama of this Sci Fi tale. It was well worth the 12 hrs approx duration of this audiobook. Robert Petkoff is an excellent narrator. David Mack is a fantastic Star Trek writer.

Exceptional

I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was a satisfying account of the events that follow Picard's trial for alleged crimes... events that we observed across many previous novels. Mack handles the emotions of the people involved expertly and I often felt like I was in the room observing like a fly on the wall. Typical for me, l enjoyed the Enterprise investigations much more thoroughly than the political aspects. Without leaning into spoilers we catch up with at least two unexpected characters, familiar from TV Trek, and it is quite a lot of fun. We also explore a species mostly familiar by name and appearance only, a species close to Picard's heart in a very specific sense. We learn much more about them and their home planet. I loved the book. I only have a single criticism and it relates to the last time we see Aneta Šmrhová. Why David, why? Haha. But otherwise thank you for another sensational story!

Good tale

(Spoilers!) I enjoyed this story but I have two issues. The prosecutor was clearly overly emotionally involved and should have been recused. Also, Worf made a blunder that should have gotten him court martialed. If someone steals a mega weapon ASSUME THEY WILL USE IT! Duh! Asside from that, it was a satisfying conclusion to Picard's Section 31 tale. Kudos to the reader. Good job.
