あらすじ・解説

Winner of Best Narration by the Author at the Audie Awards 2020 for With the Fire on High.

Finalist in Best Young Adult Audiobook at the Audie Awards 2020 for With the Fire on High.

The stunning new novel in verse from the 2019 Carnegie Medal winning and Waterstones Book Prize shortlisted author of The Poet X. 2020 Goodreads Choice Award Winner of Clap when You Land.

Camino Rios lives for the summers when her father visits her in the Dominican Republic. But this time, on the day when his plane is supposed to land, Camino arrives at the airport to see crowds of crying people....

In New York City, Yahaira Rios is called to the Principal's office, where her mother is waiting to tell her that her father, her hero, has died in a plane crash.

Separated by distance - and Papi's secrets - the two girls are forced to face a new reality in which their father is dead and their lives are forever altered. And then, when it seems like they've lost everything of their father, they learn of each other.

Papi's death uncovers all the painful truths he kept hidden and the love he divided across an ocean. And now, Camino and Yahaira are both left to grapple with what this new sister means to them and what it will now take to keep their dreams alive.

In a dual narrative novel in verse that brims with both grief and love, award-winning and best-selling Author Elizabeth Acevedo writes about the devastation of loss, the difficulty of forgiveness and the bittersweet bonds that shape our lives.

The book is based on two sisters meeting for the first time under a tragic circumstance. Theres literally so much emotions even as a guy reading it. I was on edge so many times, I almost didnt want it to end.

Elizabeth Acevedo has done it again, incredible!

A dual-voiced novel follows two sixteen-year-old sisters who never knew about each others existence until the death of their father in a plane crash. The novel is written in the memory of the second deadliest crash in America - two hundred sixty people died on the flight 587 from NYC to Santo Domingo in 2001.

This novel-in-verse is written in alternating chapters which allows for a thorough exploration of the two protagonists' inner lives, perspective and how they slowly forge a tenuous bond.

Strong female character and compelling voice. Issues such as sexual assault, racism, homophobia and economic inequality are present; however, not on the central stage.

Elizabeth Acevedo is the slam poetry genius.
Highly recommended the audiobook to get astounded by the story.

Incredibly moving and relatable

This book was so moving and beautifully narrated. It reads like a poem which adds to the sentiments of the characters. I could relate in that I both suffered traumatic loss and discovered a half sister I'd gone my whole life without knowing within weeks of each other. So listening to the descriptions of grief and how to navigate this new relationship are feelings I have and were most intense in the early days. For anyone who has experienced either I highly recommend. I also liked the way there were snippets in Spanish too. It added to the depth of emotions expressed throughout which as a Spanish speaker I appreciate. But also it was not so much that non Spanish speakers are alienated, particularly as most times the phrase is repeated in English or context is implied. I cannot praise this book enough, and I now consider it as one of my favourites.

Excellent

I have to say this is the first audiobook narration of a fiction story that I enjoy. The voice artists did an amazing job that aligns with the story. The story also accurately captures aspects of dominican culture, it has me at tears a couple of times. Would absolutely recommend.

The twist

I was so skeptical when this story started. I was skeptical at the delivery of one of the narrators as it sounds so much like a poem as opposed to a story. Oh how my opinion quickly changed!! I love loved loved this story. The details of the two different worlds and the strength of the women in this story is second to non. I would defo recommend this story.

Narration didn’t appeal

I couldn’t get past the first chapter because I didn’t enjoy the narration style. Other reviewers really liked it so check out the sample and see if it’s ok for you. It reminded me of bad poetry readings and I couldn’t concentrate on the story.

Acevedo’s a poet

Acevedo writes her novels as if they were poetry, and this is one of the many reason why I enjoy listening to them, they’re a musical narrative.
