あらすじ・解説

Proven ways to improve your child's self-esteem. A solid sense of self-worth helps your child make good choices, develop healthy relationships, and work to achieve his or her dreams. But what's the best way to instill self-confidence while still teaching your child to value and care about others? Based on a biblical understanding of human worth, Building Confidence in Your Child teaches you how to parent positively and help your child grow into a secure adult who is poised for success in life.

Deftly balancing the principles of humility and pride, trusted author and parenting expert Dr. James Dobson offers practical pointers that break through the theories and get right down to the decisions you have to make every day. In our emotionally toxic world, it's more important than ever to help your child develop healthy self-esteem. Let this audiobook show you how.

Outdated Terms/Assumptions- I'm disappointed

First, I'm a follower of Christ and seek His will for my life and my children.
I found that the book was dated and, at times, offensive in Dr. Dobson's terminology, for example the use of the word "retarded" to describe mental and learning disabilities. I am a Christian Educator and no one should use such an offensive term. I was shocked that a learned man would continue to use the word to grossly over simplify a wide range of disabilities. It was about this chapter that I stopped, prayed a blessing over Dr. Dobson and his ministry, and moved on.
I believe there are some good, practical truths but I personally couldn't get past some of the antiquated (not in a good way) generalizations and terms. I did not finish the book.

Essential

A wonderful preparation for raising any child. I didn’t want the book to end. It is full of richness and encouragement to any parent.

Great traditional approach / short read

I like and agree with how this author explains spankings for children.
Also, this author does a wonderful job of reminding us how important psychology and sociology are in the role of development.
I also like how the traditional role of males and females are addressed, and the importance of keeping these roles defined.

Disappointed

Was really disappointed with his explanation of homosexuality, the explanation discredits the rest of the book. Not sure if the rest of the book is science based or religious based. I'm a Catholic person but still understand there are some things that need to be explained correctly.

to many narrated stories not enough practicality

I am stopping in chapter 3. I keep waiting To get To the better part but I am tired of the all over the place content, I understand the referances but if you are a straightforward person this book is not for you. To many narrated stories not enough practicality. Lots of expressed opinionated observations as if to pursuae rather that to provide informative information on how to actually foster confidence in a child. Book is more on critisim of the affect on society and how children's worth or effected by it. I'm bored and uninformed on my intended purpose of purchasing this book. It can serv as a good sociology purpose but not for the title it says.

Looks elsewhere for positve parenting advice

While I do agree with the general view of today's society being overfocused on looks (girls) and athletic ability (boys), I lost my patience with this book when Dobson prescribed spanking and cuddling afterwards. THERE IS NEVER ANY REASON TO STRIKE A CHILD OF ANY AGE. EVER. The only lesson violence teaches a child under 8 is that its OK to hit people you love.
Try the Strength Switch by Lea Waters. Focusing on your childs strengths is an organic way to build confidence.

too religious

there are many good hints and remarks but there is way too much about Christian upbringing and mixing of psychology with religion. Not recommending unless you dont mind that

Zero stars

This book is dated and offensive. The author is quick to judge others and talk himself up. This book should come with a warning that it is for a Christian audience. I found his patriarchal and religious opinions offensive. He says "The root cause of all suffering is sin" What a perverted thing to say! I want a refund!
