Bright Monday is a gorgeous--and sexy--evocation of lost love, youthful longing, and the way that time folds and expands many times during a life. David Leavitt is one of the most sensitive, perceptive, wryly funny writers out there. Bright Monday is utterly delicious.
What a delight! Bright Monday is an exquisite novel about the push and pull between the comfort of today and the excitement of returning to a past that was at once complicated, problematic, and thrilling. A wonderful book by a brilliant writer.
In David Leavitt's beautiful novel, Bright Monday, the narrator remarks that 'uncertainty was the only place I felt safe.' In this sweeping novel that places itself during the AIDS crisis and then the pandemic, Leavitt writes with such tenderness and clarity about the ways in which life, even as it spools out into the future, offers moments of reconnection, of reimagination, and the hope that uncertainty may someday give way to something beautiful. In Leavitt's capable hands, it always does.
