Number-One New York Times Best Seller

Big Oil and Gas versus democracy - winner take all

In 2010, the words "earthquake swarm" entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia - including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove - was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon. Unlikely as it might seem, there is a thread connecting these events, and Rachel Maddow follows it to its crooked source: the unimaginably lucrative and equally corrupting oil and gas industry.

With her trademark black humor, Maddow takes us on a switchback journey around the globe, revealing the greed and incompetence of Big Oil and Gas along the way, and drawing a surprising conclusion about how and why the Russian government hacked the 2016 US election. She deftly shows how Russia’s rich reserves of crude have, paradoxically, stunted its growth, forcing Putin to maintain his power by spreading Russia’s rot into its rivals, its neighbors, the West’s most important alliances, and the United States. Chevron, BP, and a host of other industry players get their star turn, most notably ExxonMobil and the deceptively well-behaved Rex Tillerson. The oil and gas industry has weakened democracies in developed and developing countries, fouled oceans and rivers, and propped up authoritarian thieves and killers. But being outraged at it is, according to Maddow, “like being indignant when a lion takes down and eats a gazelle. You can’t really blame the lion. It’s in her nature."

Blowout is a call to contain the lion: to stop subsidizing the wealthiest businesses on Earth, to fight for transparency, and to check the influence of the world’s most destructive industry and its enablers. The stakes have never been higher. As Maddow writes, "Democracy either wins this one or disappears."

批評家のレビュー

“[Maddow] may be a popular, progressive news-and-commentary anchor on MSNBC, but it's not to be forgotten that she holds a doctorate in politics from Oxford and seems to devour whole libraries of data before breakfast each day.... Expect a tweetstorm as Maddow’s indictment of a corrupt industry finds readers - and it deserves many.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)

chilling...

i lived sixty years of my life in Oklahoma. i have had family, friends and clients who have lived their entire lives in or on the fringes of the oil patch. i have witnessed and they have experienced the booms and busts of the oil patch. some of Madow's story i already knew, but i am shocked and stunned at how much was totally unknown to me. i have watched Madow enough to have great respect for her diligence, intellect and honesty, even when she occasionally comes close to going on a rant. i have learned that if i sit still and listen, i will almost always find her compelling and convincing. we are in really deep trouble here - way more than i had ever imagined

Brilliant, Terrifying and yet you Must listen...

If you are already familiar with the work of the brilliant Rachel Maddow, this book is a, ‘no- brainer’ choice for you. It contains her unique gift of thorough, precise research wrapped in her fascinating craft of, ‘story telling’ which is all refreshingly presented in outstanding writing. The story, while always interesting is truly heartbreaking and terrifying, yet Rachel manages to keep you coming along because on the one hand it’s like a shocking (but real life) horror movie and on the other hand you’re desperate for some hope that we (democracy, the planet) stand any chance at all. The added bonus of Rachel narrating her own work allows us to hear every nuance, just as she intended as she wrote it, and the effect is captivating. She still manages to make us laugh through our tears and instruct without preaching. Every single high school, college, book club, legislator and adult human should read this book - and then - show the world, “this is what democracy looks like”. Rachel Maddow is a national treasure and we’d better get it together and start listening to her. She’s on to the truth of it here and she’s lighting the way (hopefully via sunlight) for any reasonable person to learn, understand and then act, if we are to save ourselves, and the future of the planet. Listen to this book and then buy one for everyone you know. As with any real life story, it’s far more interesting than fiction and further, assuming you don’t work in the industry, and perhaps even if you do, you’ll be stunned to realize how much you don’t know about what you don’t know. Don’t pass up the chance to listen to Rachel explain how everything that’s happening right now is all connected and after you run though a few stages of grief you’ll find yourself well rewarded for listening because you’ll be so much more well informed and you got there by being thoroughly engaged and fascinated throughout the entire journey.

Jaw dropping deep dive into foreign policy

Rachel Maddow’s Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth is a jaw-dropping read. Through impeccably researched yet dense material she helps readers follow the money. Her narrative is sweeping in scope. She taps into the-now, decades in our past, and complex layers of the 2016 United States Presidential election. She drills breathtakingly deep, and reveals underpinnings of our current social, political, psychological state of affairs; especially as they relate to the US and its negotiations with hostile governments who’ve successfully tapped into our healthy democracy. Maddow once again proves herself a consummate journalist; an accessible storyteller with a keen sense of unpacking difficult subject matter.

You MUST LOVE Dr. Maddow to get through this.

This book is not bad if you are fascinated by the oil and gas industry (I am not) AND you love Dr. Maddow's incredible prowess at researching a complex topic and laying out a story describing it. Like the "A block" (first part) of her nightly news program, this book occasionally shines bright with information, then often tediously stretches to fill in an over-allocated span of time. It seemed to be two to three hours too long, but I am not certain where I would have cut.

It is undeniably an interesting topic from a geopolitics perspective, and yet another sobering example of abject corruption in the American system of governance; A tale of the knife-to-throat "diplomacy" of massive corporate interest vs. local governance. It's no spoiler that the rich and corrupt usually win (excepting the eventual suicide of one such victor), and no spoiler that the physically-local, non-stockholders of those companies always lose (often gravely).

If you are hoping for an uplifting last chapter when Putin, Rex Tilerson and others admit their graft, corruption and indifference to harming their fellow man -- it's not going to happen. Ever!

More than I ever wanted to know about oil and gas.

I never had an interest in knowing anything about the oil and gas companies and I was perfectly happy not thinking about Russia in my daily life. Unfortunately my life has been turned into an ugly reality show I never wanted or watched. Since RM can explain anything in such a way that I can understand, I thought it was time to to be schooled. I gritted my teeth and listened to her melodious voice weave me a despicable B grade horror story of corruption . Thank you Tillerson and Putin for your absolute greed so great that we could no longer look away. Thank You Rachel Maddow for telling a story that we all need to hear.

Must Read

I was born and raised in west Texas (direction not city) and I know the oil life. The impact the oil industry has on our communities appears is different conversation. This book gives insight on how it is all connected and how sad and destructive it is.

Oil and power makes me think of what my dad would say to me as a young kid, “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.

Thank you for doing your research and making sure it is accurate.

This book is kickaxx

I live in a oil and gas state...in SW Kansas. Blowout is an excellent book, explains how we as a nation became so dependent on the industry and how internationally oil and gas has corrupted small and large countries. Analysis Russia's dependency on oil and gas production for their economy and why they have threated Ukraine...Western Europe and others. Blowout was such an eye opener on how oil and gas ties into so much of our world's interactions. Alternative methods need to be found to save our planet from distruction. Only negative is Schlumberger is not pronounced as Schlumberger...need to use the French pronounciation, such a little thing for such a great listen. Will be purchasing the hard copy next. Don't miss out on this great read.

Complex story draws you in

of course Maddow is a good story teller - short version of the news. This is a long long story which makes you think you are listening to a novel. You have the good guys and the bad guys. Then there is the greed where a few billons isn't enough. There are victims, human and non human. The villains don't care. people in power can be bought. Then we have future generations. It is so easy for the villains to sell out the future for the bottom line.

We've heard parts of the story on the news - if we have time to listen. But those news stories are just pieces of a much longer story that has been waiting to be told. Anyone who thinks Putin is a wise and benevolent dictator has been fooled. But he is just one of many villains who gets the Maddow treatment.

This is one of those must read (or listen) books. Mostly we owe it to the next generations to understand the value of our votes now for their future. History is about choices made. Recent history is full of poor choices by those in power which enrich the few at the expense of the vast majority. The recently oil rich nations of Africa is but one example full of greediness and extreme poverty. One short story on the nightly news or in news stories in papers or online are pieces of the puzzle.

Oil and gas do make a mess and the oil spilled only have diaper like clean up devices after all these years of oil spills. Now the oil companies want to tackle ever more impossible places to drill for oil. Yet, there is no research on handling massive oil spills. Future generations will live or die because of modern day greed. There are strong personalities who knew that oil and gas was locked in rock formations deep in the earth's crust, they found a way to bring up that oil and gas to break the stranglehold the Middle East had over the world. Remember the gas lines and designated days to buy gas? These are just part of the complex story of the oil and gas industry.

This is one of the books I will listen to again. Thanks Rachel for knitting in all the pieces to complex the story of the oil industry and politics.

I live in Oklahoma

Thank God for Rachel Maddow. I live in Oklahoma and I remember one winter Propane shot up to 4.00 a gallon. It took everything I had to just stay warm that winter. I now know why... God bless you Rachel and all that you are and do. You my dear are a national treasure. Thank you for writing this book.

Brilliant story telling and a real eye opener

Brilliantly written and narrated, lots of interwoven stories about the oil industry that explain a lot about the world we live in today and the challenge we face if we want to shift away from our addiction to fossil fuels. It could have been a dry topic but the author's humour made it a really enjoyable listen.

I absolutely loved this. Rachel Maddow exposes the history of misdeeds by the energy industry with an amazing mix of humour and scholarly precision. It does for oil and gas what The Bean Counters does for accountancy.

#ClimateActionNow? - Know your opposition!

Rachel Maddow’s birds-eye view of the man-made industry choking the natural world - with us in it:
A well written overview of „typical sinners”, useful idiots and a few heroes in our oil-, and gas-soaked world. More than just presenting people with their predictable flaws, this book presents the oil-, and gas industry itself as the corrupting force it generally is.

If we are to wean ourselves off of the industries grip on our everyday lives, understanding its lure, power and methods is essential. This book is a guide; and an inspiration to regulators and laymen alike.

Humankind is faced with three interlinked crises; the stability of our climate and depleetion of biodiversity of the world, and threats to the stability of democracies everywhere. Understanding the connections between these dangers is imperative. Reading this book is a good investment of time, and definitely never boring!

I keep returning to a different media-memory where the wife of Rex Tillerson expresses her faith in the hand-of-God being involved in the selection of her husband as a secretary of state of the US. - As if him taking the job was a calling he should fulfill.

Error.

Try the hand of Mamon being involved - squared.

Brilliant

The interwoven threads of this book and the complex nature of the topic would suggest that this would be a turgid read. Nothing could be more wrong. The book is clear and convincing, and when you add in the author’s own narration with her style that many will already be familiar with, the whole book becomes a tour de force. This is the best non-fiction I have listened to for a long time.

Who would have thought that a non-fiction book about oil and gas could be more gripping than a spy novel????

Every chapter is more captivating than the last and Rachel Maddow’s flawless narration makes this stunning exposé of the oil and gas industry (and Russia’s pivotal role both in this and in world politics) seem frighteningly easy to understand. This is the first book that I’m going to listen to in its entirety immediately after finishing my first go-through. And I’m buying the print version for those of my nearest and dearest who don’t subscribe to Audible.
Required reading for everyone who wants to understand the dire threats to our planet, our society and our political systems.

Puts a spotlight in the right place, on the right people, at the right time

In any critical evaluation of a text, it’s essential not to separate an author from their information when determining the validity of the arguments. In this case, Maddow carries the narrative with the same credibility for which she is best known and hence there is no need to second guess any of the facts, even when they err on the side of unbelievable. This book has timed its entry to bookstores well; for context on the current Ukraine palaver that will surely define the Trump presidency (if not end it), this winding and neurone-connecting book is a must read.
