An intimate, powerful, and inspiring memoir by the former first lady of the United States

In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As first lady of the United States of America - the first African American to serve in that role - she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the US and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare.

In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations - and whose story inspires us to do the same.

Boring

I struggled to finish it. I did learn a few interesting things but mostly it was about the Obama's being black & overcoming things. I'm happy for them but found the book boring.

Love Michelle But Couldn't Finish

Love Michelle Obama, but I thought it was pretty boring. 30% of it was amazing and enticing, but the rest was kind of mundane. She reads at a very slow speed too. I think I was expecting an autobiography as Trevor Noah's was, but it didn't live up to that for me. My review opinion may be skewed as I tend not to like the autobiographies, but thought hers might be as good as Trevor's.

I'm out of the majority here, but...

I liked the book, but I didn't love it. To really like a book, I need some more interesting writing or surprises that keep me riveted. To love a book, it has to change me as a person or change my way of thinking. Becoming is well-written, but not written like literature, and I enjoyed reading it, but it didn't change my life.

My book club will all disagree with me, much more likely to give the book five stars than four or three and the number of books sold suggest this is far more popular than I would have guessed. But is it popular because Michelle Obama is popular or will it stand the test of time?

Wasn't very political until about the last hour

If you are deciding on whether or not to read/listen to this book as a republican or conservative, I can say it didn't get too political until about the last hour. This book mainly focused on how Michelle Obama came to be (shocker). I loved the background info of her initiatives, and White House affairs.

Books like these are a great read for anyone with opposing views. It helps with understanding and empathy.

meh

She talks very very slow. She also tries to downplay her higher education. I will not be re-listening.

Did not move me

I thought I would hear an amazing story about Michelle Obama overcoming racial struggles, feminine issues, balancing work and motherhood. But I didn’t. It’s like she glossed over it all. I didn’t feel the meat of any story she had to tell.

Was expecting more

I struggled to finish this book honestly. The end gets better. She reads it well, but I find it surface. Without any depth.

Unremarkable

I love Michelle Obama. I voted for her husband both times; I grew to love and admire her more and more through the 8 years he was in office. My favorite line: "When they go low, we go high."
But the book was a "this and that" taIe. I kept waiting for her to make meaning out of her experiences. I kept waiting for her to say something profound. I did skip around ('cause I just got bored) so there might have been something there that I missed.
It was interesting to me that her growing up was not terribly different from mine - I was a middle class white girl who had many of the same life experiences (even the piano lessons) - and that surprised me. I developed admiration for her mother and the parenting principles that both her mother and father practiced.
Maybe the book I'm looking for from her will come when she's 80 and can reflect on the amazing life that she has led.

It's exactly what I thought it would be

The best part was the first half where she actually discussed herself and her upbringing. Then it basically turned into a replay of the Obama presidency, understandably so, I mean that consumed her life for 8+ years. It's basically exactly what I thought it would be, her regurgitating the same lines that President Obama, and the MSM force fed us for years.

Huge fan of the Obama's but...

First, I think Michelle and Barack Obama are really great people. But I have mixed feelings about this book. I really did not enjoy the first 8 chapters. Hearing about Michelle's upbringing sounded a bit self-serving. There were too many references to Harvard and Princeton. Having gone to an Ivy League myself for undergrad, I could feel myself cringe whenever she referred to her world class education. It sounded a little elitist, to be honest. When the book changes gear and she meets Barack, I became excited again. It's very obvious that he is the exceptional half to that pair. She is unimaginative. She admits that her success is all about setting goals and checking the boxes. But Barack is a renaissance man and a big ideas guy. I enjoyed hearing about her struggles during his rise to political fame and her focus on her kids. I could relate to this. But it was hard at times, to feel sorry for her as she describes the struggles associated with moving to the White House. It sounds like she wants sympathy and is trying hard to get it and yet describes all of its opulence, as if she is a princess moving into her castle. I was hoping for more depth from this book. I think it's probably too hard to do, given how much ground needs to be covered. Michelle Obama is in an impossible position. As my review is an example, people will critique her to the end of time. I'm glad she was my first lady for 8 years. But I think I need to read more about Barack, as he is really the uber unique individual that I admire so much.

We still don’t deserve Michelle Obama

This was a great way to spend twenty hours. I didn’t think I could long for The Obamas any more than I already did, but this book reminds you how we had smart, gracious people in the White House.

Heartwarming, inspiring and just wonderful.

I loved every moment of this book. She doesn't try to sugarcoat her struggles and really shared in a way that she hasn't before. I feel privileged to have read about our FFL's extraordinary and inspiring journey. I also feel empowered to make my own journey, my own.

Wonderful

I had high hopes, and at first I thought the story moved a bit slow - but there was a reason for every little story told. The book ties her stories wonderfully together, and I have a much better undertaking of who Michelle Obama is and what drives her. I am left so very impressed and utterly inspired.

Fascinating & Encouraging

Endearing and enthralling to hear the very ordinary but incredible story of Michelle and her family. Such figures of hope.
