あらすじ・解説

A New York Times best seller.

Winner of the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award 2018.

The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end, despite pressure from its charismatic CEO and threats by her lawyers.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup 'unicorn' promised to revolutionise the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes' worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: the technology didn't work.

In Bad Blood, John Carreyrou tells the riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

Now to be adapted into a film, with Jennifer Lawrence to star.

批評家のレビュー

"Wall Street Journal investigative journalist Carreyrou presents meticulously researched, clearly written evidence of the fraud perpetrated by business wunderkind Elizabeth Holmes. The former CEO of the once-renowned Silicon Valley startup, Theranos, bilked investors of millions and potentially risked the lives of patients around the world with a groundbreaking diagnostic product that did not work reliably. Will Damron is the perfect choice as narrator. His precisely articulated style makes the entire effort sound as if it is a cloak-and-dagger spy novel." (AudioFile)

"Chilling...Reads like a West Coast version of All the President’s Men." (New York Times Book Review)

Wow - what a story

Unbelievable to understand how bad this scandal was from the inside out. Incredible insights unbelievable deceptions. And such massive valuations. Truly shows how hype can take over sense in startup valuations.

Gripping!

I started the book and haven’t been able to put it down. Both shocked and amazed by how she was able to dupe so many people for so long. A fantastic read.

Good book

A little slow to start but riveting near the end. Thank you to the author for exposing the ruthless tactics of the company and the shocking behavior of the attorneys. The whistle blowers deserve a special mention and praise. Well done to all who brought an end to her lies.

A Real Life Allegory of Our Time

BAD BLOOD crystallises how the so-called 'seven deadly sins' have permeated all aspects of modern society, business and media culture, and our appetite for quick fame, riches and ease - even in something as small as providing blood samples for a potentially life-saving test - have abberated our sense of right from wrong. The author's ability to emote the tension and anxt felt by the many real life characters in this real life drama, and to paint a vivid image of a self-indulgent, sociopathic Holmes herself was outstanding, as was the narration. Excellent.

Worth for start up and investors

Many watchouts and learnings relating to leadership whether you are an entrepreneur or investor.. also re emphasises the importance to rigorous processes from FDA, EMA type authorities. (Eg Can also now relate the downsides of Boeing being politically stronger than FAA).

Gripping story

I found "Bad Blood" as compelling as the best of John Grisham's legal thrillers, but it's all real.

Excellent and highly engaging!

It's like peeking into the mind of Hitler and understanding what makes him tick, so you can discern another potential Hitler and (a) if you can, help that person avoid that same path of destruction or (b) if beyond redemption, to run away from a potential Hitler when you still can and not be part of his curses and eternal judgement because, as SS men have defended themselves: "we are just doing our job, we have a family to feed, and don't want court martial".

Another surprising observation about readers of this book: the reaction to the seriousness of this event and its accompanying consequences seem to depend on the perception of gravity of a certain transgression against another man, and how serious other's lives are being valued. Some sees it as a very bright red flag that must be avoided at all cost, while others consider it a "challenge" to be even more "crafty".

Boring, Repetitive and Uninteresting

I seem to have been listening to a different book than everyone else. I started interested, but as each persons story was unveiled... it basically repeated the chapter before with a slightly different bad thing. I found the timeline really hard to follow, and would have much preferred a shorter & more succinct tale which gave annocdotes from different people at the correct point of the timeline. There were only so many references to her all black outfit, love of Steve Jobs & low voice I could take before I stopped caring. Tl;dr

The things we do to for "success"

So how far would you go to get what you want?
This is a great story for those interested in fraudsters & seeing how the once mightly can fall.
Youll learn how those with power can influence for the worst & how focusing on "success" can affect peoples lives.
The problem I had with the book was its repetition in some areas to the extent I felt I was being hoodwinked as a reader, in the same way the victims were being hoodwinked by the company in question.
Still worth a read, because of the characterisation & affect it had on people. Alos makes you question your own values. Wouldn't surprise me if a film comes from it.

Excellent book

Excellent book. Incredible achievement of the author, who with help of Tyler Schulz and a few other key people together uncovered the con job did by Elisabeth Holmes. A great read but also a great favour to the humanity - they have almost certainly saved lives.

chilling story of ambition and public wishfulness

this was a terrific book, and cautionary tale about our gullibility and confirmation bias. The importance of upholding rigor in journalism is borne out in this very well written account of the Theranos scandal. many people who should have known and acted with more circumspection are revealed to have few scruples, while the serious character flaws and judgment of Elizabeth Holmes is draw-droppingly retold. one is left with the impression, however, that despite all this, she probably still doesn't get it.

Like a thriller!

It was my first audible experience and I think this book was a great choice to start that. The book is very well written. It was a gripping story, maybe being a true story made it very interesting. It was well narrated as well. Overall it was a good book.
p.s. I'm really proud of that Tyler kid! Also great ethics by the journalist..

Bloody Good Read

A tale of how passion and drive kept running when the product stayed still.

It really fascinating and delves into the psyche of somebody who wants to make it in Silicone Valley so much that they don't let reality get in the way.

The front cover reads 'I couldn't put this thriller down', he's right ... you can't stop listening.

Grips you like fiction, but it's NOT!

Somehow I missed the whole Theranos scandal, and the book was the first account of the story - it is insane and eye opening! First of all, the story and plot is is gripping, so you just want to continue reading/listening to it! Second - it shows you how vulnerable the society is to all sorts of farce. Great work John Carreyrou!

Amazing journalism

The best audio book I’ve been fortunate to listen too. The sheer evil audaciousness of Holmes and Theranous are really something to behold. The persistence of Carreyrou is to be admired also.

An in-depth investigation presented masterfully

Carreyrou lays out the immense and complicated story of Theranos with great clarity and insight. The book is very well performed; at times it has the suspenseful tone of a spy thriller and is just as exciting. This story went far deeper than I could have imagined with an extraordinary cast of characters that I know I will be returning to.

Captivating - unbelievable that this is a true story

This book is apparently being made into a movie which would be a hit.

I had not heard of the company prior to listening and was enthralled. A thoroughly well researched book with plenty of detail.

You know it's a good book when you take the long way to work and drive below the speed limit while listening!

Elizabeth Holmes must be admired for her ability to sell her vision to people at all levels of the social and political hierarchy. However the negative traits and acts of continued deception detailed in this book are astonishing. This book will not win her many friends and make her future challenging and if all true will be deserved.

Thoroughly recommended as a captivating listen that will have you driving below the speed limit.

I often find books not interesting and stop reading them halfway through but not this one. I couldn't stop listening to this audiobook. I finished it (13 h long) in just few days. The author John Carreyrou did an excellent job in telling the story! I highly recommend this audiobook to everyone, especially those who like to watch tv shows like Shark Tank.

I knew nothing of this story prior to seeing it on Audible as a recommendation. I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy it but thought I’d give it a listen as the cover indicates it will soon become a film. I couldn’t stop listening! All the technicalities (medical, legal, financial) are well explained and you become absorbed, astounded and amazed by the story unfolding. I highly recommend!

Gripping (true!) story from first to last page.

Almost pulling off one of history's most brazen cons, the two main characters in this story are magnetic and - clearly - totally without scruples. Two vipers in a tangle that defies belief. That they were able to dupe some of the world's richest, most sophisticated and famous investors of hundreds of millions of dollars while consistently tripping over their own feet - and being picked up by those same investors - was a feat of majestic proportions. Read this brilliantly written and narrated story. I couldn't put it down.

Wild story worth your time.

The book was very interesting. Immediately one can realise the misconduct and brazen behaviour occurring behind the closed doors of a Silicon Valley unicorn. As someone who was not familiar with the history of the company beyond a headline here or there, the gravity of the situation and implications if not for the reporting is really frightening. This company could have easily entered our everyday lives as a stapled power house. Unlike Apple and Microsoft as it is so often compared the medical field Theranos was redefining had very tangible, life changing implications. Holmes is told to have weaved a web of lies over many years, upheld by her determination, skills and ruthless ambition. The reader/listener can feel the transition from delayed progress to blatant misconduct through the retelling of the companies accession. What’s most tragic is the human capital which was expended. The lives which were and still are altered by these events. We will wait to see how the story ends!

I hesitate to give this 5 stars, because I reserve this for books which are for my taste especially suited. Yet I say without hesitation that this is a page turner and wonderfully executed. I enjoyed every moment. I would recommend this in an instant to anyone with the faintest of interest.
