 At just two years old, Cathy Nguyen left Vietnam with her mother. On the day Saigon fell, they landed in Hawaii and reunited with her father, who was studying on a USAID scholarship. That moment of upheaval shaped her family’s path and her own lifelong commitment to service. With 20+ years of experience across Africa, Asia/Pacific, and the U.S., Cathy has served as a USAID staffer, PEPFAR Coordinator, and Returned Peace Corps Volunteer. In this episode, she shares her family’s story, the transformative role USAID played in their lives, and the values of community, responsibility, and public service that guide her work. We explore USAID’s impact in global health—from HIV/AIDS care to pandemic preparedness—and reflect on today’s challenges facing foreign aid.
