このコンテンツについて
In the past few days Angel Reese has become the center of WNBA headlines once again and her actions both on and off the court could impact her biography for years to come. The biggest news dropped Friday when the Chicago Sky announced Angel would be suspended for the first half of their upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces. According to the team she was being benched because of comments deemed detrimental to the team. This penalty arrived shortly after she had already served a one-game suspension for tallying her eighth technical foul of the season. The reality is the Sky have struggled all year and Angel has not held back her frustration.
After their recent loss she spoke candidly to the Chicago Tribune explaining she might "have to move in a different direction and do what’s best for me" if the franchise did not improve and doubled down saying "We have to get good players. We have to get great players. That's a non-negotiable for me." She specifically critiqued the quality of the current roster and indicated she and Kamilla Cardoso were among only a couple of guarantees to be back next season. Those frank statements apparently did not sit well with management or some in the locker room.
Reaction from fans and media was ferocious. Many online leapt to Angel’s defense pointing out that as the Sky’s clear star and merchandise draw she deserved respect not just scrutiny. There were also social media posts criticizing the Sky for making Angel a target for more online hate by putting her discipline in the public eye. Meanwhile teammate Courtney Vandersloot responded to Angel’s suggestion that the team could not depend on her next year by publicly asserting that age will "absolutely not" be a factor in her return after injury and making clear she intends to play for the Sky again.
Despite all the controversy Angel quickly walked back part of her Tribune interview apologizing to teammates and clarifying that she never intended to insult anyone personally. She told media she is "frustrated with myself right now" and admitted "I probably am frustrated with myself right now" stressing her remarks were taken out of context and that she has "to be better with my language in interviews." Still, the incident and her high profile in the game ensured Angel’s every move and word trended across sports fans’ timelines.
On the court, her play remains elite—she continues to average 14.7 points and a league best 12.6 rebounds through 30 games. The Chicago Sky however have clinched another losing record, now 10-31, facing roster uncertainty and speculation about offseason overhaul or even a trade involving Angel herself. As of this morning, no new bombshells have landed outside of Angel’s impending first-half suspension and the continued Twitter storm.
