"[His] skill at dramatizing historical forces proves magisterial once more." ( Booklist)

あらすじ・解説

Best-selling master of alternate history Harry Turtledove offers a new vision of America after World War I. In 1920, as veterans question the very nation they fought for, socialist Upton Sinclair challenges Teddy Roosevelt for the presidency. And in the defeated Confederacy, a fiery racist whips his followers into a frenzy.

Great book....no spoilers in review

I love Turtledove, his series are as immersive as George Martin, Wilbur Smith or Jack Whyte who all I also love. However reading the reviews i see alot of disappointment for first time readers/listeners and i believe i know why. This book is not the first in a trilogy no matter what the info says. It is actually the 4th or 5th in a 10 or 11 book series depending on if you want to call 'How Few Remain'(starting with the Civil War) or ''The American Front'(starting with the hypothetical Second Spanish War and includes alot of characters that show up in 'Blood and Iron') the first book.

By picking up 'Blood and Iron' as your first book you will likely be disappointed as you miss alot of the back story that set the characters on thier current paths and not seeing how the fanaticism of characters like Featherston developed to the point its currently at. The author does provide explanations for those that are just starting with this book but they are quite two dimensional compared to thier actual back story in previous novels where it was all fleshed out really well.

Turtledove is an excellent author to dive into alternative historical fiction, especially if you like immersive worlds and not a one book and done read. But this is not the book to kickstart your interest in it, go back to the actual beginning of the series.

Alternate History????

Initially, I thought that the idea of 'Alternate History's' was kind of crazy. But, after listening to this book, I have found the genre very interesting. The narrator is top-notch and the story line is captivating. I have found myself actually searching for more audios of this type.

The Master of Alternate History!

I started reading Harry Turtledove with The World War series. As someone who truly enjoys the alternate history sub-genre I have read pretty much all of his books.
His work is a lot of fun to read and has that addictive quality that compels you to pick up the next book in the series. His writing style, particularly his dialogue is quite distinctive and can at times become repetitive but people who enjoy his work are able to overlook this because his formula is solid and he avoids pretentious flights of fancy.
The American Empire series picks up after the end of World War One in a universe where The Confederacy won The Civil War. In the aftermath of a U.S. victory over The C.S.A. the story renders this universe through the viewpoint of several characters from The U.S. and C.S.A. The viewpoints encompass all walks of life and include historical figures. The story tells a more or less beat for beat analogue of post WW1 Germany including an autocratic psychopath and a chilling version of an American Nazi party. The book and the entire "Southern Victory" arc work because it rings of plausibility. It allows a glimpse into a world that never was and connects the dots in a way that allows you to believe that this world could have easily existed. For fans of alternate history this checks the most important box.
For a certain reader/listener this will be a very satisfying experience. I hope this review gives such a person the impetus to have that experience.

Another amazing performance and story

Every entry in this series is a masterpiece and every performance by the voice over professional is equally top notch. Truly one of the greats.

Genius!

The correlation between post war CSA and post war Germany after WW1 is genius. This entire epic from “How Few Remain” till now is Turtledove’s way of showing that any civilization can plunge into Hate, Depravity, and Genocide. I furthermore think it’s important to know that with all the right factors the capacity for evil is in all of us despite our lofty notions.

THE CHAPTERS ARE MESSED UP

Alright admittedly I have not finished the book.
I have not listened to the whole thing.
I just want to point Out an issue with this audiobooks organization.

I have listened to all of the previous books so far and they all had around 20 Hour long chapters.
However this one has 42 30 minute chapters. The Audio reading one chapter of the book is spread out between multiple chapters of the audiobook. Also the first chapters doesn’t conclude alongside the audio. The Ending of Chapter 1 is on the same track as the Beginning of Chapter 2.
It may seem strange for me to blow this minor mix up and disorganization out of proportion.
But from what I hear the Squeaky wheel gets the grease and No other reviews seem to be pointing this out. I hope one day this Review is outdated and people can look at it as an example of the folk at audible fixing their mistake.

Pardon the outrage.
I just Know you can do better.

not turtledove's best

I wanted to like this. The theme is complicates by too many actors and would probably have been easier to get into if this was part of a trilogy providing better context. I would have sought a refund but previously received a whining message from customer service that I ask for too many of those (can't expect Amazon to live up to an advertised benefit)

Filler and Overly Long

I am honestly pretty shocked that the books in the American Empire series are all 24 hours long. I'm still going thru this series but only out of an obligation to listen to the whole series.

Still this isn't terrible even if it is unnecessarily long winded. A couple of my least characters finally get killed off finally. I would never listen to this again even though it is passable entertainment.

great book

the author can get on extended tangents a little too often, like how one character constant complains about being sunburnt, but otherwise an excellent book.
