In this 17th-century work, Milton masterfully combines classical mythology, epic narrative, and biblical allusions to present Satan as a flawed, demanding humanlike character. No poet had ever done that before. In Book IX, when Adam and Eve are separated in the Garden of Eden and Satan takes advantage of the situation to tempt Eve with the forbidden apple, all of humankind comes tumbling down.
