Edith Wharton
Ned and Mary Boyne move into an old English country house called Lyng. They are told that the house's ghost appears only "afterward," meaning people recognise it only after an important event has already happened. As the story unfolds, Ned mysteriously disappears after speaking with a strange visitor. Mary gradually realises that the visitor was the ghost, and that Ned's disappearance is connected to unethical business dealings from his past.
Edith Wharton (1862–1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, and designer best known for her insightful portrayals of upper-class society. She became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921 for The Age of Innocence. Wharton also wrote many acclaimed ghost stories, including Afterward, which are admired for their psychological depth and atmospheric suspense.
