Truscott Family

1912. Fifteen-year-old Kate Truscott leaves her small Hampshire village to become a nursemaid to five children she's never met. She's looking forward to a new adventure. Life in town with the wealthy Winton family is different to anything Kate has known before. But she enjoys looking after her charges, becoming firm friends with Clara, the eldest daughter, and noticing that 18-year-old Philip, the eldest son, is so very handsome. But Kate knows that she would be considered an unacceptable match for a wealthy banker's son.

1922. After the horrors of the Great War, the close-knit Truscott family return to everyday life on their busy Hampshire farm. But the two Truscott sisters are on very different paths. Kate is happily married to Albert, content to be a mother and farmer’s wife. Her younger sister Dot sets her heart on becoming a teacher. But an unforeseen tragedy means Dot must give up her place at college. Instead she resigns herself to becoming a lady’s companion to wealthy Mrs Humboldt, who is a difficult woman to please.

1937. Shy but determined Tilly Truscott leaves her Hampshire home to train as a nurse at the Royal County Hospital on the Isle of Wight, where she finds an unexpected friend in vivacious Fliss Marcheson. She also catches the eye of handsome Dr Jonathan Burrows. Meanwhile, Tilly's beloved nephew Ronnie begins an apprenticeship at a local aeronautical company, but dreams of becoming a pilot.
