Years ago, a portal opened onto something the world had no name for. What came through took everything Lauriel Valendril had.

Adamar found her in the ruins of her village, a small girl hiding among the dead. He was an elven swordsman at the end of a legendary career, and he took her in as his own. What he did not expect was how badly she wanted to be able to fight back. He began teaching her the Andúlari, a secret elven fighting art most of the world has forgotten.

She mastered it younger than anyone before her.

Now the old evil is stirring again, and Adamar knows his fighting days are behind him. He gives her the thing he has guarded his whole life and never once been able to use. Isilmwé, a blade of power no one has seen in an age. He was only ever its keeper, the Bladewarden, charged with hiding the blade until a master rose who could wake it. He had known for years that it would be her, and he had spent every one of them hoping he was wrong.

The defenses fall one by one. She does not ride for the portal alone. A wizard, a warlock, a healer, and a fighter go with her.
