If twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet knows anything for certain, it’s that she’ll get her desired apprenticeship with the Royal Guild. After all, her family is well-connected, and she’s all but dating the grand duke’s nephew. But Madeline does not get her apprenticeship. Instead, she finds herself working with a trio of knight marshals, traipsing around the US, arresting all manner of magical miscreants. Only one of them knows her secret—a secret she plans to take to the grave. Unfortunately, that plan falls through the moment a creature of shadows shows up on her doorstep.

It's been a rough couple of days for twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet, the newest (and most reluctant) member of Gray's renowned team of knight marshals. Not only did her shadow creatures create a forest fire that's burning down western Colorado, but she has no idea where to find the thresholds so she can send the beasts back to the land from which they came (or even how to open them). On top of that, her parents have figured out something is amiss with her magic, Rafe has taken off on a wild pixie chase, and the status of her relationship is seated in the region of "it's complicated."

Twenty-two-year-old Madeline Bennet is certain of three things: she's sick and tired of being kidnapped, her love life is a royal mess, and something is wrong with her magic. Madeline is fabled to be the only woman alive who can open the thresholds to Aparia, but there's a tiny problem—she can't see the magic to unlock them, and time is running out. The shadow creatures are creeping out of hiding once more, the Entitled are furious she slipped through their fingers, and the Royal Guild has discovered her existence. At least her knights have her back… mostly.

She can finally see the magic to unlock the thresholds to Aparia, and her love life is more stable than it's ever been. Sure, she and her favorite Griffon don't get a lot of quality time together. Also true, several shadow dragons are determined to destroy the human world. On top of that, there's a tiny glitch in the link that even Teagan didn't expect when he worked his Vulture magic on her and Rafe. But all that becomes inconsequential when someone steps forward with the power to not only challenge Madeline's birthright but threaten the safety of people on both sides of the thresholds.
