Miles Morales as Spider-Man is a coming-of-age tale of a smart, affable teen coming into his power. From his reluctance to becoming a super hero to his desire to help others, to the rocky balance between his school life and super hero responsibilities, Miles is always at the precipice of making tough decisions—choices whose consequences are as weighted in his personal life as they often are for the survival of the world.

Naked, bloody, and screaming in pain - this is the Wolverine that faced fans in the story arc Weapon X. This was more than just the tale of how Wolverine got his adamantium skeleton and claws. Legendary creator Barry Windsor-Smith challenged fans' expectations of super hero stories and created Marvel's most brutal and beautiful comic.

In the mid-1970s, Misty Knight burst onto the pages of Marvel Comics. Before Storm, Shuri, or Riri, Misty opened the doors of comics as Marvel's first Black woman superhero. A detective and martial artist with a bionic arm that gives her heroic strength, Misty personified the undercurrent of independent Black media and the budding post-soul culture. First appearing in 1975, she broke down stereotypes to become one of the backbone characters of the Marvel Universe.

In 1984, Marvel's Editor-In-Chief Jim Shooter brought Marvel's heroes and villains together for an epic battle that became the template for comic book crossovers and impacted Marvel's storylines for decades, including major changes to the Spider-Man mythos and the introduction of a new villain. Within the 12-part storyline, characters who had never met before would find themselves thrown together to achieve a common goal. They formed shaky alliances. There were tremendous power struggles. Teams within teams would form.

The 1990s and early 2000s were a time of intense change and experimentation for Marvel Comics. Out of this emerged The Ultimates—a comic which would have an explosive impact on Marvel and the broader pop culture landscape. Writer Mark Millar, with artists Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, and Paul Neary, reimagined the classic characters that made up Marvel’s premiere super hero team, the Avengers. Looking at them through a modern, post-9/11 lens, the creators treated the characters as super soldiers who reported to the US government.
