Matilda thought her brother had died until Hugh told her otherwise. He’s still incarcerated, but he’s alive. Returning to Edin with William and Hugh beside her, she’s ready to fight for her brother’s freedom. Anticipating a battle with bureaucrats for Artan’s liberation, it turns into something entirely different when they discover Hugh’s left the city’s gates open. Their worst fears are confirmed when a diseased stumbles out to meet them.  

Matilda and Olga have had a glimpse of life inside the asylum. The suffering, the torture, the descent into madness. With Grandfather Jacks now dead at their hands, they have a chance to get as far away from the place as possible, but they have to go back; not only is their friend Dianna still locked up in the dark building, but many other innocent women and children are entrapped inside the hellish institution.

William and his friends have battled scores of the diseased and left communities behind them on their journey to find what lies south of the wall bisecting the country. They’ve lost loved ones and overcame many challenges, but they’ve never faced an obstacle as great as the one before them: the wall, steel, sheer, and 200 feet tall—an insurmountable barrier designed to separate the north and south. Their dream should stop here, but the group has a plan to get to the other side, and it might just work.
