Before he can return to New York from Miami, Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast is called to investigate something very strange that has happened on the west coast of Florida. Dozens of human feet, identically clad in blue, have washed up on beaches. All exhibit unmistakable signs of violence. Mais le gouvernement américain fait de nouveau appel à lui quand Chalker, l'un de ses anciens collègues du laboratoire nucléaire de Los Alamos, prend une famille en otage. Gideon est dépêché sur place pour tenter de le raisonner, mais les forces spéciales abattent finalement le forcené... Les autorités découvrent alors que Chalker, qui s'était converti à l'islam, était irradié.

En 2008, neuf alpinistes ne sont jamais revenus d'une expédition dans le Nouveau-Mexique.
