Women, so often referred to as the gentler sex - in this volume at least, this is an unfounded and unlikely description. From their minds and pens comes a series of macabre, twisted tales that are anything but gentle. But as they weave their magic, usually black, and mesh you into their narrative you just know 'sugar and spice and all things nice' are not likely to be what little girls really are made of and certainly not these femme fatales....

The third installment of Edith Nesbit's Psammead Trilogy continues to follow the lives of the original five children and their magical endeavors. The children once again encounter the Psammead, but this time they also discover an ancient amulet that contains time-traveling powers and fuels their adventure throughout the novel. As the children experience different civilizations through time, they meet a multitude of new characters and explore many notable locales such as Atlantis before the flood, Babylon, and the Tin Islands.

The Book of Dragons consists of eight fantastical stories of dragons and people who get to meet and interact with them. The dragons are of all kinds, colors, temperaments, and ages. The stories are full of adventures and action. The book was published originally in The Strand Magazine in 1899 as a seven-part series, with an additional story added after the author’s death.

Originally written as a magazine serial, Railway Children tells the story of a family whose life is upturned when the father is accused of espionage and imprisoned. The man’s wife and three children move to a house near a railroad and befriend their new neighbors, who are able to help reunite the family and prove the father’s innocence.

When young Lionel is whisked from his nursery one morning and crowned king, he becomes fascinated by the forbidden Book of Beasts in the palace library. But when a real red dragon escapes from the pages and wreaks havoc on the kingdom, Lionel has to act fast to make things right. But how? Edith Nesbit's entertaining stories found a fan in J.K. Rowling, and with good reason. Like "Harry Potter", these selections from "The Book of Dragons" are full of just the right mix of magic, adventure, and everyday life.

In this volume we come up against the definition of Northern Europe. There are many, each with plausibility and each so obvious. So, here’s ours.
