It's 2002 now and Matt's 91. Clay is 52 and his grandson, Elliott is 22. Elliott wants to be a writer and has asked grandpa Matt if he and his private eye exploits would like to be the subject of his first book. Matt agrees and tells Elliott the story of how it all began back in the 1930s. This story starts in 1934 and has Matt telling of his beginnings in the Chicago Police Department, his move to Los Angeles, his beginnings in the Los Angeles Police Department, his first marriage to Stella and life after her death.

Doug has been having disturbing dreams about his friend, Alan, who had killed himself nearly thirty years earlier. While shopping at the annual flea market one summer day, Doug is drawn to a mirror in a plain wooden frame. He brings the mirror home and hangs it in his office, the perfect place for it as far as he's concerned. One night while sitting in front of his word processor trying to find the inspiration he desperately needs to finish his latest story, Doug sees something out of the corner of his eye and it's moving.

That is, the main character in this story, Eddie Heller, crosses paths with Matt Cooper but the story is really about Eddie and his quest to become a cop in Hollywood during the 1930s. It follows Eddie life from birth on, ending up on the streets of Hollywood in the 1950s.

I've bundled five Matt Cooper stories together here from the 1948 era. They were written sequentially and flow together almost as a single novel.

Elliott is hired to find a witness to a fatal auto accident that happened right outside his office building. Matt is hired to get the goods on a nasty neighbor who seems to be vandalizing his own property in an effort to frame his neighbor. But why?

Elliott is on another case, so Gloria steps up and handles this one with surprising results.
