Pubblicato nel 1928, è ispirato alla storia familiare della sua amica intima Vita Sackville-West. È, a ragione, l’opera più popolare della Woolf: una storia dell'Inghilterra dell'arco di trecento anni, vista attraverso il filtro dei sentimenti, usi e abitudini di un uomo, che poi diventa donna a metà del romanzo.
