Anne Shirley wird von den meisten Schülern an der Dorfschule von Avonlea angehimmelt. Aber keineswegs alle mögen die neue junge Lehrerin. Der flegelhafte Anthony Pye hat es regelrecht auf Anne abgesehen. An einem kalten Wintermorgen kommt es zu einer sehr hässlichen Szene in der Schule, die keines der Schulkinder von Avonlea je vergessen wird...Anne genießt ihre letzten Ferientage auf Green Gables. Mit Beginn des neuen Schuljahres wird sie die Lehrerstelle an der Dorfschule von Avonlea übernehmen.

Zur Freude von Marilla und Matthew hält Miss Stacy, Annes Lehrerin, den quirligen Rotschopf von Green Gables für geeignet, das Queens College zu besuchen. Leider bedeutet dies, dass Anne einstweilen nach Charlottetown....
