George Orwell (1903-50) is known around the world for his satirical novella Animal Farm and his dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, but he was arguably at his best in the essay form.

Gracia Querejeta-k egokitu du George Orwell idazle britainiarraren Abereen etxaldea literatur klasikoa. Eleberri satiriko hau 1945ean argitaratu zen lehenengoz, eta 1917ko Errusiar Iraultzaren eta ondoren sortutako Sobietar Batasunaren irudikapen alegorikoa da. Istorioan, abereak gizaki zapaltzaileen aurka matxinatzen dira, etxaldean gizarte berdinzale eta justuagoa ezartzeko. Baina txerriek, buruzagitza hartu eta gerora tirano bihurtzen direnek, hasierako helburu haiek galbideratzen dituzte. Horrek erakusten ditu ideia iraultzaileei egindako traizioa eta botere absolutuaren arriskuak.

Nepřetržité války a nedostatek základních potravin ještě přispívají k všeobecné duševní prázdnotě a mizérii.

Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching... A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations.
