The last remnants of humanity escaped the Death as Earth was destroyed. Among the survivors is James Ursidae, a fearsome warrior whose despair now outweighs his expectations for the future. After months of drifting through intergalactic space, Ursidae and what humanity remains have found a spark of hope on the planet Lintalla and in the company of its native Illani. Unfortunately, starting anew comes at a price, and even in a strange system, violence and war are a constant. Paul's mission in Andromeda comes to an end and he must reluctantly return to the Deebees to oversee their critical early development...but on the way back he goes nightcrawler hunting, rescuing the last pieces of the Progarren civilization that the previous Gauntlet War failed to eradicate, as this one is only beginning to escalate.

The Paladin's quest to save the Andromeda galaxy begins to escalate as they seize a disputed planet from two obstinate lower level races who are blocking travel and commerce through it that other systems are depending upon to fuel the war effort against the Asferja. The thing is, after the Paladin uncork the traffic jam, they're not giving the planet back for the malcontents to muck up a second time...and that doesn't go over very well with the locals.

With Admiral Gorgo's personal empire decapitated, dozens of systems are in the lurch. Without supply lines and a clear chain of command, it's up to the Grand Admiral to step in and clean things up before too many people starve to death...or worse. Some of the systems have accepted his command authority and new supply lines are forming, but others are not. Some are defiantly claiming independence, while others are searching for options to continue their barbaric ways that they know Aatroxiss will stop.
