Seeking an escape from the monotony and drudgery of days-on-end army life, Frank Rocklin, an actor, approaches his commanding general with a bold plan to spy on Vicksburg and assess its military condition. Vicksburg is the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi.

Upon the death of her mother, Mark Rocklin learns of Allyn, the daughter he didn't know existed. He asks a friend to bring her to Gracefield. Upon her arrival, she is treated well, but cannot seem to make a place for herself with the Rocklins or her father. Hoping to help his daughter, Mark buys a plantation for her, with the requirement that she marry for the property to be put in her name.

Lowell Rocklin, Clay's youngest son, encounters General Longstreet, who understands the South's current dilemma and encourages Lowell to make an observation balloon for the Confederate army. Before he can begin the project, Lowell is wounded and sent to Chimborazo war hospital in Richmond.

Burke Rocklin, Clay's irresponsible brother, returns home with one goal: to marry an heiress. He fixes his sights on Belinda King, a spoiled, beautiful young heiress who leads him on a merry chase. But Burke's plans are waylaid by the Second Battle of Manassas, where he is critically wounded.

When Paul Bristol returns home from Europe, he knows his involvement in the war is inevitable, though reluctant. As an artist and photographer he is requested to go to the battlefront and capture Confederate bravery on film. But he needs an assistant trained in photography.
