Le mystère semble bien épais pour le commissaire Brunetti. Mais, il en est sûr, la victime ne lui est pas inconnue. C’est l’irremplaçable Mlle Elettra qui l’aide à retrouver la mémoire : l’homme avait été filmé lors des manifestations des agriculteurs, à l’automne. La piste est fragile, mais elle permet au commissaire Brunetti et à l’inspecteur Vianello de remonter jusqu’à un abattoir situé sur le continent, à Mestre, où règnent le chantage et la corruption.

Après avoir quitté son petit ami durant des vacances ratées, Anna Maria Giusti rentre chez elle. Au cœur de la nuit vénitienne, une adolescente chute du pont San Boldo dans un canal. Incapable de nager, Manuela est sur le point de se noyer quand un passant la sauve. Mais elle n’en sort pas indemne, souffrant de dommages cérébraux irréversibles qui la condamnent à garder à tout jamais l’esprit d’une enfant. Quinze ans plus tard, à l’occasion d’un gala de charité, Brunetti rencontre la comtesse Lando-Continui, une riche mécène, qui s’avère être la grandmère de Manuela et qui lui demande d’enquêter sur le drame. Elle est convaincue qu’il ne s’agit pas d’un simple accident.
