"The Snowman" is maybe one of the most touching stories by Hans Christian Andersen. It is a tale about unrequited love, and an occasion of reflection on the mysteries of existence and passion. In a small winter garden, a snowman glimpses a stove glowing by the window of the nearby house. He soon falls in love, and longs for the stove's companionship despite the warnings of his friend, the dog, who say the stove's heat would melt him.

A butterfly, determined to find the perfect bride among the flowers, flits from bloom to bloom with a critical eye. Each candidate is admired—and dismissed—for being too stiff, too sentimental, too fleeting, too ordinary, or too realistic about what time brings. Spring fades into summer, and summer into autumn, while the butterfly continues to wait for perfection.

The snow man in the yard has fallen in love with the stove he can see through the kitchen window. Meanwhile, the dog tries to warn him of the dangerous nature of this particular attraction.

Originally published in 1844 in one of CA Reitzel's New Fairy Tales collections, "The Fir Tree" is a moralistic tale that reveals the importance of appreciating what you have. In it, a young fir tree is so fixated on growing up that he does not value his life in the forest. But when Christmas comes, he discovers that what he thought he wanted wasn't what he expected it to be.
