Everyone who writes about Henry Miller begins by taking a side. Either he was a liberator who tore the last Victorian veil off human life, or he was a vulgar egotist who mistook his own appetites for wisdom. This book refuses both chairs at that tired table. It proposes something stranger and more useful: that Miller was never really a writer at all, and that the question of whether to admire him has been distracting us for eighty years from the one thing he was genuinely good for.

We spend a great deal of energy pretending to be certain. We sign our names to opinions we have not examined, defend convictions we inherited rather than chose, and treat the absence of doubt as though it were the same thing as the presence of truth. Bertrand Russell spent a long, turbulent, and astonishingly productive life insisting that this is exactly backward—that the honest mind is not the one that has stopped asking questions, but the one that has learned to keep asking them without falling apart. This book is a portrait of that mind.

In the early nineteenth century, a philosopher with a razor-sharp mind and a disposition darker than a moonless night unleashed an idea so potent, so insidiously logical, that it has been quietly rewiring human consciousness ever since. Arthur Schopenhauer declared the world a theater of blind, insatiable Will —a cosmic force that drives everything from the growth of weeds to the ache of unrequited love —and concluded that suffering is not an accident of existence but its very essence. It was, by any measure, a terrible thing to tell people. And yet millions have found it impossible to unhear.

James Hutton made his fortune out of soot. He and a friend worked out how to cook the black residue scraped from Edinburgh's chimneys into a pale crystalline salt that dyers and metalworkers would pay for, and which had until then come by ship from Egypt. It was a good business. It left him free to spend the rest of his life doing what he actually wanted to do, which was to climb into ditches and look at rocks. Everyone agreed the world was about six thousand years old. This was not superstition. It was arithmetic, done carefully, from the only continuous historical document anyone had.

In 1965 Vera Rubin became the first woman formally permitted to observe at Palomar, a mountain whose administrators explained that her time there would have to be short because the building had no ladies' room. She cut a small skirt out of paper, taped it onto the stick figure on the men's room door, announced that the facility was now compliant, and went to work. She then spent fifteen years producing one of the most durable measurements in the history of astronomy. The measurement is simple enough to explain at a bus stop.

Ralph Waldo Emerson taught a nation how to think without asking anyone's permission. He never got around to teaching it how to check. Thought moves twice. It climbs from single things to a governing idea, and then it comes back down carrying a map, to find out whether the idea survives contact with anything capable of breaking it. Emerson performed the first motion better than almost anyone who has written in English. He never performed the second—not once in fifty years of work, and not by oversight.

A young man is sentenced to death for an elbow. He is not frightened, and that is the thing nobody can forgive him. His mother comes to the visiting room and makes him take off his cap. His lawyer, who has spent twenty-one years being a professional and has lately begun to think he would rather not die at his desk, finds that he cannot stop thinking about him. And somewhere above the ocean a woman who once decided everything for him is reading his trial transcript aloud to a man with a very great deal of money.

Two centuries before the spreadsheet, an English lawyer proposed that right and wrong could be settled by arithmetic. Add up the pleasure an action produces, subtract the pain, and the larger column wins. Jeremy Bentham called it the greatest happiness of the greatest number, and it remains the most audacious idea in the history of ethics: that the human soul might be counted. This book honors Bentham as a liberator who freed morality from authority and superstition, and then takes his calculus apart from the inside, using his own sharpest tool against him.

Somewhere in the Milky Way, if the arithmetic is kind, there may be a committee much like ours arguing about funding. Or there may be nobody at all. The remarkable thing is that we can now say, with real precision, exactly which pieces of ignorance stand between us and the answer. In 1961 a young radio astronomer needed an agenda for a three-day meeting about a subject most of his colleagues considered slightly disreputable. He broke the impossible question into seven smaller ones and wrote them on a blackboard. He was not predicting anything. He was managing a discussion.

In the space of a single year, a cautious German professor who disapproved of revolutions produced two numbers that would shape the century after him. One of them was measured. The other was manufactured. Nobody, including him, ever wrote the difference down. The first was the quantum of action, squeezed out of infrared readings taken by instrument builders in a Berlin laboratory founded to help the lamp industry sell brighter lamps. It was a real quantity, extracted from real dials, and it has survived every revision physics has thrown at it since.

He got the disease right and the cure wrong, and almost nobody noticed, because the disease was so well described that the listener arrived at the prescription already grateful. Alasdair MacIntyre spent forty years arguing that our moral vocabulary is salvage—words rescued from a wreck and used with conviction by people who no longer possess the framework that made them mean anything. He then proposed a remedy: that a human life has the unity of a story, and that we become answerable by knowing which story we are in.

We are taught from childhood that thinking means narrowing down. Weigh the options, eliminate the weak ones, arrive at the single right answer, and hold it. But what if the deepest freedom of the mind lies in refusing to narrow at all, in keeping a whole spectrum of incompatible truths alive at once, the way a quantum system holds many states before the world forces it to choose just one?

Fred Hoyle worked out where you came from. Not in the vague way that phrase is usually meant, but atom by atom: the calcium in your teeth, the iron riding in your blood, the oxygen you are using right now to read this sentence.

Every description of anything is a projection. Physics describes the world in space and time; mathematics in number; philosophy in existence and cause. Each of these is a medium, and none of them need belong to the thing described.

Nine hundred years before “think for yourself” became a slogan, Pierre Abélard, known to English readers as Peter Abelard, said it out loud in a world that answered such talk with fire and the knife. He argued that we should understand in order to believe, not the reverse. He insisted that guilt lives in intention, not in the deed. He held that even saints and scriptures could be wrong, and that doubt was not a sin but a method.

For a hundred years the cosmological constant has been served up as physics' most embarrassing riddle. Empty space, we are told, has no structure at all —no grain, no direction, no preferred place to stand —and yet it presses outward on the universe, stretching the heavens apart with a quiet, relentless force. How can the same nothing be both featureless and full of push? How can emptiness shove? This book answers by refusing the trick question. The word “structureless,” it turns out, smuggles two very different ideas into one.

Three men who believe themselves to be the Teacher, the Messenger and the Awakened share a locked ward, get along like brothers, and regard the hospital staff as the only genuinely disturbed people in the building. A fourth patient, who appears on no list, lies with the blanket over his head and sighs. When the consultant schedules them all for a lobotomy, they climb the highest mountain on earth without leaving the ward and ask God to make the human race slightly wiser. The results are not encouraging. They then try the opposite.

The universe was perfectly content until someone arrived and began to ask why. Stars burned, rivers ran, and matter rearranged itself without complaint—until consciousness appeared and demanded an explanation that was never going to come. From that single, fateful encounter, the absurd was born.

Every age believes it has finally found the one key that unlocks everything. In the nineteenth century it was Theosophy, the bold and improbable system assembled by Helena Blavatsky, who promised to braid together science, religion, and the vanished wisdom of the East into a single shining...

For sixteen centuries, the same mistake has been made by men who meant no harm: the mistake of confusing what belongs to the soul with what belongs to the state. The state can build roads, run courts, and supply clean water. It cannot save anyone. The soul can hold truth, suffer, and find peace. It cannot administer a city. When these two orders are mixed, the reaction is slow but inexorable. It produced the holy empires of Byzantium and Muscovy. It produced the secular messianisms of the twentieth century. It is producing, in milder forms, the political theologies of our own moment.
