Sugar Mamas is a book of personal stories of women who have a condition called lipedema, which affects 11% of women in the world and results in often debilitating fat deposits in the legs, thighs, hips, arms and other areas. While lipedema is primarily a woman's disease, the research on the condition has only in the last five years really taken off, so the causes and treatments are still in early research stages.

It is often misdiagnosed as obesity, causing the patient to go years without proper treatment, and possible disease progression. Advocacy for lipedema awareness can help provide early diagnosis and treatment, reduce misdiagnosis, improve access to important information regarding how to manage the condition, enhance treatment options, address stigma and body image issues, educate policymakers, and support research and funding.
