From The King in Yellow, this tale narrated by Mark Alexander begins: "The street is not fashionable, neither is it shabby. It is a pariah among streets - a street without a Quarter. It is generally understood to lie outside the pale of the aristocratic Avenue de l'Observatoire. The students of the Montparnasse Quarter consider it swell and will have none of it. The Latin Quarter, from the Luxembourg, its northern frontier, sneers at its respectability and regards with disfavour the correctly costumed students who haunt it. Few strangers go into it."

This collection by Robert W. Chambers was first published in 1895 and features stories loosely tied together with one theme, the supernatural. Many of the stories in The King in Yellow were not received well by the critics of the time due to their supernatural undertones. Some of the stories mention a play by the same name that had been outlawed in some regions of the world. It was thought that the play could induce madness in those who viewed it. Two of the stories in this book take place in a fictional world of the future 1920s and are macabre in tone.

Skillfully narrated by voice actor Mark Turetsky, The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers is a classic in the field of the supernatural. The Yellow King and Carcosa were often alluded to in a popular TV series True Detective, where evil and madness are often a theme.

Considered by many to be the father of supernatural fiction, Robert W. Chambers' work continues to influence writers today. Originally published in 1897, The Mystery of Choice brings together seven chilling tales, most of them set in Brittany. Classic Tales of Terror collects two classic chillers of the supernatural. "The Cats of Ulthar" tells of an elderly couple with a penchant for animal cruelty. The King in Yellow is a collection of short stories - mysterious, macabre, and endearing by turns. The work has been linked to H. P. Lovecraft, with the titular entity forming a part of the extended Cthulhu mythos. The first three stories are darkly suspenseful and linked by the mysterious Yellow Sign and the malevolent King in Yellow. These will please Lovecraft fans most of all, and the ghost stories will not disappoint. Also included in this collection are a war story and a strange romance, both of which intrigue and entertain.
