Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by the British author Mary Shelley. Shelley wrote the novel when she was 18 years old. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818, and this audiobook is read from that text. Shelley's name appeared on the revised third edition, published in 1831. In modern popular culture, people have tended to refer to the Creature as "Frankenstein" ...

After the brutal and turbulent Wars of the Roses, Henry VII reigned over England and the sons of his rival Edward IV, once held captive in the Tower of London, were lost to time. Years later, a young man with boundless energy and hope emerged, claiming to be Richard, Duke of York, heir of Edward IV and the rightful king of England. Mary Shelley’s swashbuckling narrative of the doomed claimant to the throne imagines Richard from his youth in hiding as the lowly Perkin Warbeck to his execution as a traitor at the hands of Henry VII. Richard gains friends and supporters in his quest to claim ...

This is a classic (gothic) horror story, and one of the earliest examples of science fiction. The main characters are Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, the daemon. Shelley called the scientist a "pale student of unhallowed arts" and his creation a "hideous phantasm of a man." This story is not only delightfully frightful, but arguably represents one of the clearest criticisms of science during a time when, like the daemon, it was leaving its own infancy and, like Dr. Frankenstein, testing its ethical boundaries. As Shelley said, "Frightful must it be; for supremely frightful would be the ...
