Jako dopravní prostředek jim má sloužit obrovský ocelový slon poháněný parním strojem, původně vyrobený pro bohatého rádžu. Verne líčí v románu nejen zeměpisné a přírodní zajímavosti, ale je tu i dobrodružná zápletka – plukovník Munroe hodlá pomstít smrt své ženy.
