The Marble Faun of 1860 was the last of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s four major romances. Set in Italy, the narrative blends elements of the travel guide, fable, and gothic novel. The main characters include Miriam, a beautiful painter with a mysterious past who is compared to Beatrice, Cleopatra and Eve, and Hilda, an innocent young woman with strong moral principles. The sculptor Kenyon has an eye for Hilda, whilst Donatello, the Count of Monte Beni, is besotted by Miriam. Donatello bears a resemblance to the statue type called the Faun of Praxiteles.

The Capture of Father Time tells the story of Jim, the son of an Arizona cowboy, and an expert with the lasso. When Jim visits relatives in the East, he amuses his cousins with his lasso tricks. One day he takes a horse to a pasture in the countryside, where he tosses his lasso at imaginary targets. To his surprise, it catches an invisible object. On close inspection, Jim sees that he has caught an old man with a bald head and a long white beard, dressed in a white robe and carrying an hourglass. It was Father Time!

In 1898, the British were building a railway line between Mombasa in Kenya and Uganda. At the Tsavo River in Kenya where a bridge needed to be built, the project was suddenly interrupted by two man-eating lions that targeted the camps of the workers. Over a period of nine months, the lions killed scores of people. These lions were deliberately hunting people, preferring humans over any other prey, and they seemed to have supernatural abilities in evading all attempts to stop them. Colonel J.H. Patterson, the chief engineer in charge of the project, finally managed to eliminate them.

Travels with a Donkey in the Cévennes (1879), a pioneering classic of outdoor literature, is one of Robert Louis Stevenson's earliest published works. It gives an account of his 12 day, 200 kilometer hiking journey through the sparsely populated areas of the Cévennes mountains in south-central France. The Cévennes was the site of a Protestant rebellion around 1702, which was severely suppressed by Louis XIV. Stevenson was well-versed in the history and evokes scenes from the rebellion as he passes through the area of the rebellion during the final days of his trek.

A wealthy Boston woman named Claribel Sudds consults Dr. Daws, a wise old chemist who dabbles in magic, about her desire for a stage career. For a fee, Daws prepares some magic candies in five flavors that will endow the eater with the talents of dancing, singing, elocution, piano playing and high kicking. However, Claribel forgets the box of goodies on a store counter where it is inadvertently taken by the 12-year-old Bessie Bostwick. At home, Bessie eats the chocolate candy and places the others in a serving dish in the hall.

It popularized the phrase "The Man in the Arena", as a person who is heavily involved in a situation that requires courage, skill, or tenacity, as opposed to someone sitting on the side-lines and watching: “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

William James (1842 - 1910) was a psychologist and a philosopher of note. For James, pragmatism meant an emphasis on radical empiricism and the concept that the meaning of any idea is valid only in terms of its experiential and practical consequences. He tests competing systems of thought in the marketplace of actual experience to determine their validity. The intent is to see whether a particular philosophical theory or way of looking at the world makes an actual difference in individual conduct.

Anne Virginia Culbertson who was born in Ohio in 1864, traveled around Virginia and North Carolina in the post-war years interviewing black Southerners to collect and publish their folk tales. The Woman Who Married an Owl is such a folk tale, written in dialect, about a woman’s encounter with an owl. It is told as a bedtime story by Aunt ‘Phrony to three children, and contains references to Cherokee words.

This absorbing book teaches children about the many forms of wildlife and the animals' relationships with one another.

A Vendetta is a dark short story that shows a grieving old woman's determination to get revenge for her slain son. She wishes that there were either a cousin, father, or brother to carry on this vendetta, but since there’s no one, the mother pursues it. With her living in rage, she has no time to rest and only focuses on the idea of killing the murderer. She trains her dog, doing harsh starvation training to prepare for the day. After the deed is done, she can relax again.

In His Steps is a popular work of religious fiction by Charles Monroe Sheldon which was first published in 1896, and has sold more than 50 million copies to date. This inspirational novel popularized the expression, “What Would Jesus Do?” The story begins with four small-town characters who resolve to undertake no action without first considering Christ's example. In The Relic, Henri Fontal, a young agnostic, is engaged to Gilberte who asked him to bring her a relic from his visit to Germany. He cheats by giving her a sheep bone, she discovers his dishonesty, and breaks the engagement. The poor distraught Henri writes to her uncle, the abbé Louis d’Ennemare, an old friend, to beg him to salvage at any cost his engagement with the abbé’s vivacious and very devout niece, Gilberte.

James Petigru Boyce (1827 - 1888) was the founding President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and also served as its first professor of Theology. His Abstract of Systematic Theology is a practical textbook for pastors and students. A philosophical introduction on the science of theology is followed by 16 chapters devoted to the study of God. Boyce then proceeds to creation, providence, the fall of man, Christology, salvation, sanctification, and eschatology.

"Liberalism: A Sample" is an essay by G. K. Chesterton which appears in Utopia of Usurers and Other Essays (1917). It concerns the astounding baseness to which journalism had sunk. Asking why party political journalism was so bad, Chesterton states that it is even worse than it intends to be. He claims that the newspapers simply cannot argue, and do not even pretend to argue. And that there’s a sort of carelessness in their degradation, so that they assume that the reader does not have a mind.

This is Leo Tolstoy's integration of the four biblical gospels into a single account of the life of Jesus. The Gospel in Brief is an intriguing fusion of biblical texts and Tolstoy's own religious views. Tolstoy explains that his goal is a “solution to the problem of life," not a theological or historical statement. Patrick Henry passionately opposed the ratification of the United States Constitution in his speech in the Virginia ratifying convention, delivered June 5, 1788. It is also known as his "Shall Liberty or Empire Be Sought?" speech. Focusing on rights and liberties, he claimed that amazing features are attributed to the Constitution, but when put to the test, they will fail. Henry placed liberty above union, criticized the powers of the president and Senate, and warned against the creation of a standing army.

The Flying Inn is a satirical novel by G.K. Chesterton, first published in 1914. The story is set in a future England where a repressive ideology dominates the country’s political and social life. The narrative follows the adventures of Humphrey Pump and Captain Patrick Dalroy as they travel around the country in a donkey cart with a barrel of rum in order to evade prohibition. The two men spread good cheer wherever they go on their journey, which encounters romance, revolution, and a host of memorable characters.

A Canterbury resident, Mrs. Bargrave, is visited by her old friend and former neighbor, Mrs. Veal, who says that she would like to catch up before departing on a journey. They discuss books on death and friendship before Mrs. Veal tells her friend that her locked cabinet contains a purse filled with gold, and asks her to write a letter to her brother. Mrs. Bargrave steps out to call her daughter, and when she returns she finds Mrs. Veal standing in the street about to leave. Mrs. Bargrave subsequently looks for Mrs. Veal, but finds out that she had died the day before the visit.
