Shelley is one of the most revered figures in the English poetical landscape. Born on the 4th August 1792 he has, over the years, become rightly regarded as a major Romantic poet. Yet during his own lifetime little of his work was published. Publishers feared his radical views and possible charges against themselves for blasphemy and sedition. Letitia Elizabeth Landon was born on 14 August 1802 in Chelsea, London. A precocious child she had her first poem published is 1820 using a single ‘L’ as her marker. The following year her first volume appeared and sold well. She published a further two poems that same year with just the initials ‘L. E. L.' It provided the basis for much intrigue. She became the chief reviewer of the Gazette and published her second collection, The Improvisatrice, in 1824. By 1826, rumours began to circulate that she had had affairs.

As a child, Artie Kipps is left in the care of his aunt and uncle, who have a toy shop in New Romney, Kent. His friends are Sid Pornick and his sister Ann, with whom he falls childishly in love. At the age of 14 Artie is apprenticed to Mr Shalford at the Folkestone Drapery Bazaar, and he loses touch with the Pornicks. Life as an apprentice is grim, and he joins an evening class to improve himself. It is run by Helen Washingham, who is beautiful, artistic and socially smart, and Kipps is bedazzled by her.

The short story is often viewed as an inferior relation to the novel. But it is an art in itself. Romanticism was a new movement in philosophy and the arts that began in the late 18th century when major political events shook the world, such as the French Revolution and American independence. Marsh agreed a deal with the poet and bookseller Harold Munro, who had recently opened The Poetry Bookshop in London’s Devonshire Street to publish the books in return for a share of the profits.
