Prende il treno Parigi-Bordeaux e condivide lo scompartimento con un uomo che lo tiene sveglio tutta la notte a causa della sua agitazione. Al mattino Maigret si accorge che l'uomo sta per saltare dal treno prima dell'arrivo in stazione, e senza pensare alle conseguenze si getta anch'egli dal treno in corsa.

Quando Arlette si voltò, Maigret vide la macchia chiara del suo viso e il tratto deciso, sanguigno, della bocca...Sempre immobile davanti a lui, la giovane donna aggiunse allora con una voce diversa, che faceva male sentire: «E... non vuole approfittarne, come gli altri?». Maigret provò l'impulso di fare con Arlette quello che lei aveva fatto con la madre: schiaffeggiarla come una bambina perversa. Si limitò a stringerle un braccio con forza e a spingerla verso la discesa.

Chi ha ucciso Germaine sfondandole il cranio a colpi di martello e perché ha gettato nella Mosa il corpo solo tre giorni dopo? Siamo a Givet, paesino francese al confine con il Belgio dove Germaine, giovane ragazza madre, era scomparsa misteriosamente in una mattina di gennaio. La gente del paese è convinta che i colpevoli siano i fiamminghi e così Maigret, per capire il perché di questi sospetti, ne frequenta la casa. È proprio così che trova colpevole e movente grazie al suo imbattibile intuito.

I Donadieu sono un possente clan della Rochelle. Quando il capotribù Oscar l’Armatore scompare ha inizio una disgregazione che investe prima La Rochelle per diramarsi poi a Parigi. Con la stessa sicurezza con cui si manteneva, «l'ordine Donadieu» crolla. E trascina con sè non soltanto il clan, ma anche colui che era stato il freddo agente della rovina: l'arrivista Philippe.

Un fâcheux manque de discernement. Emile Maugin apprend du médecin qui l'examine qu'il n'a plus une longue espérance de vie devant lui. Il fait alors un retour sur lui-même : acteur comblé, il règne de manière tyrannique sur son entourage qui vit à ses dépens. Parvenu au faîte de la gloire, il aime à rappeler son enfance misérable dans le Marais vendéen... Der Mitinhaber des Pharmakonzerns Josset & Virieu hat sich der Polizei gestellt – Adrien Josset wird verdächtigt, seine Frau ermordet zu haben. Der Grund? Josset hat eine junge Geliebte und deren Vater versprochen, sie zu heiraten. Doch im Verhör am Quai des Orfèvres beteuert er vehement seine Unschuld. Maigret ist versucht, Josset zu glauben, zumal bei den Ermittlungen des Untersuchungsrichters offenbar einiges unter den Teppich gekehrt wird.
