While he is most famous for his didactic fable, The Prophet, the works of Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) address a wide range of philosophical and social issues. The overriding theme of his narratives is not the religious universalism that he is supposed to represent, but rather the inevitable conflict between human aspirations and the remorseless machinations of fate.

Kahlil Gibran reveals his vision of the soul and understanding of the world - past, present, and future - in this rich sampling of more than 20 works. Kahlil Gibran wrote prolifically and passionately in Arabic as well as English. The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American poet and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 100 different languages, making it one of the most translated books in history, and it has never been out of print. The prophet, Al Mustafa, has lived in the city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition.

Kahlil Gibran is the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. Sand and Foam is a book of aphorisms, poems, and parables by the author of The Prophet - a philosopher at his window commenting on the scene passing below. In the Arab world, Gibran is regarded as a literary and political rebel. Kahlil Gibran was a master of capturing stories through poetic tales. He somehow managed to take a simple human thought or concept, and breathe life into it through his words in such a way that one cannot help but be instantly transported right into the midst of it. The Madman, His Parables and Poems is a book written by Kahlil Gibran, which was published in the United States by Alfred A. Knopf in 1918, with illustrations reproduced from original drawings by the author. It was Gibran's first book in English to be published, also marking the beginning of the second phase of Gibran's career. May Ziade, with whom Gibran had been corresponding since 1912, reviewed it in Al-Hilal, a magazine in Egypt.
