Abolitionism was the movement that strove to end slavery in the United States. The abolitionists saw slavery as a stain and an affliction on the United States and made it their goal to eradicate slave ownership. Abolitionists produced anti-slavery literature, sent petitions to Congress, and ran for political office.

Sojourner Truth’s autobiographical narrative chronicles her life as a slave in Upstate New York and her transformation into an abolitionist, women’s rights activist, orator, and preacher. She was born around 1797 and emancipated by state law in 1827. The following year she moved to New York City, where she became involved with various unorthodox religious groups. By 1843 she had become an itinerant preacher and spent most of the next 13 years in Northampton, Massachusetts. She was illiterate; her autobiography was dictated to her neighbor Olive Gilbert.

The abolitionist and women's rights advocate Sojourner Truth (born Isabella Baumfree) was freed from slavery in 1827 by the New York Gradual Abolition Act. This speech of hers was delivered in 1853 at a Woman's Rights Convention at the Broadway Tabernacle in New York. She rebuked the men who did not support their mothers' and wives' struggles, while encouraging women to persist in the fight for rights.

Ms. Truth opens this speech by saying that black men and women gathering together should strike fear into the general population's hearts - and right she is. She dismisses the idea that women can't get things done and claims that women can change anything if they put their mind to it.

One of the most important slave narratives of all time, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth tells the story of an African-American woman who struggled against the bondages of slavery in the mid-1800s. With the strength of her spirituality, she overcame obstacles to become a leading abolitionist and champion of women's rights. Published originally in 1850 and later updated, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth was dictated by Sojourner Truth to her neighbor, Olive Gilbert.
