A frightful horde of men and women, armed with scythes, pikes, billhooks, and rusty swords, advance towards the massive front doors of Notre Dame Cathedral. For many years Quasimodo the bellringer has lived peacefully in the cathedral with his master, Archdeacon Claude Frollo. But the arrival of Esmeralda, the young and dazzlingly beautiful gypsy dancer, changes everything. Esmeralda has fallen in love with the brave and handsome Captain Phoebus.

In the Gothic towers of the cathedral of Notre-Dame - which has been subjected to decades of degradation and neglect - lives its bell ringer, Quasimodo. Persecuted as wicked and pilloried for his broken appearance, he’s shown kindness only by the alluring Esmeralda, an outsider herself, who fills Quasimodo’s heart with a hope and devotion beyond reason. When she falls victim to the lies of the vengeful and lustful Archdeacon Claude Frollo, only Quasimodo can save her from the gallows. In sanctuary, looming high above Paris, their fates entwine.

Andre Germaine has been condemned by the law of the state and freaky circumstance. He has been accused of his own murder and of a crime against his own family. He fought under Boneparte, he served his country, married and fathered a child, but all those things come to nothing in the cell of the condemned. He believes it is the working of a curse placed upon his father to last through all the generations of the line for having loved too well a woman who was promised to another man.

In the teeming city of medieval Paris lives Quasimodo, a man born with a hunchback who lives in the Notre Dame Cathedral as a bell ringer. He is treated despicably by everyone around him, save for Esmeralda, a beautiful woman who has attracted the eyes of many in Paris. His love for Esmeralda will drive him to do daring feats of bravery to keep her safe from the world and those who would harm her, even if it leads to his own undoing.

THE LAUGHING MAN Another epic novel from the pen of Victor Hugo, perhaps the greatest romantic author of the 19th Century. The Laughing Man (L’Homme Qui Rit) is a gothic romance with satirical, political and spiritual overtones. Set in England after Cromwell’s failed republic and during the reign of Queen Anne (early 18thC) the story follows the fortunes of a small boy who has been cruelly and deliberately disfigured when he was just an infant.

Quasimodo, the isolated and disfigured bell-ringer of the great cathedral, lives hidden from the world—feared by the crowds below and bound in loyalty to the powerful archdeacon who raised him. But everything changes when he encounters Esmeralda, a free-spirited dancer whose kindness awakens a longing he has never known. As desire, jealousy, and power collide in the shadow of the cathedral, the lives of Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and those around them spiral toward a tragic reckoning. In a city ruled by appearances and authority, compassion may be the rarest—and most dangerous—virtue of all.
