The story begins in the midst of World War I, in the middle of naval attacks between the armies of various nations. On a submarine that had been captured in the English Channel, the combatants from several countries fight for the ownership of the vessel. After a series of unfortunate circumstances, the submarine is sent off-course into the South Pacific and then is even further rerouted to Antarctica.

John Carter is a veteran looking to make his way in the world after the Civil War. After finding gold in Arizona, he is chased into hiding in a cave that turns out to house a portal to Mars. David Innes is a young man who has just inherited a large mining company. An eccentric inventor, Abner Perry, convinces Innes to underwrite a project to build an 'iron mole,' claiming it will make them both wealthy. The mechanical beast works well, actually too well. On the maiden voyage, instead of digging for a few minutes and returning, they plunge straight through the earth's crust into the 'inner world' of Pellucidar.

Tarzan cared little for the fate of adventurer Brian Gregory, drawn to the legendary city of Ashair by the rumor of the Father of Diamonds, the world’s hugest gem. But to the ape-man the tie of friendship is unbreakable, and Paul d’Arnot’s pleas move him to agree to guide the expedition Gregory’s father and sister have organized for his rescue. The enigmatic Atan Thome is also obsessed with the Father of Diamonds, and has planted agents in the Gregory safari to spy out its route and sabotage its efforts.

Tarzan disenchanted with civilized life leaves America for Europe. But after numerous scrapes and adventures Tarzan is ultimately ambushed and thrown overboard the ship he has taken passage on. He swims for his life and miraculously finds himself in the coastal jungle where he was brought up by apes. Tarzan once again becomes part of the jungle life and finds himself actively protecting a new adopted family. But Civilization is only around the corner and it is not finished with Tarzan.
