An Experiment in Luxury is the book end of all this as a young man visits his rich friend and his millionaire family. It is a conventional scene where the young man's friend, son of the household, encourages him to speak only conventionally to his mother or he will get on her bad side. We see her preoccupied with her worries and the husband/millionaire taking his mind off of it all by playing with a kitten.

"The Holly Tree" is a warm Christmas story by Charles Dickens and a listening treat for adults during the holiday season or almost any time of year. Full of wonderful Dickensian words, phrases, and irony. The story contains a strain of great truth, and love for Americans, who Dickens depicts over-friendly but warm, kindly, generous, and warm hearted.

> Comfortable is a coming-of-age story about a young girl who learns in her senior year that her parents are getting divorced; wants to find a proper romantic relationship; studies martial arts for self-defense; and is confronted by two attackers, whom she takes out and kills in self-defense. It features a rather stunning conclusion.

"An Experiment in Misery" in a story similar to "The Men in the Storm" except that it focuses on one character, and a new fellow traveler called the Assassin, who struggle for warmth and a place for the night. The main character stops first at a saloon for free soup with a beer, where he meets the Assassin. The Assassin accosts the man seeking a few cents for a room.

This is the simplest guide to weight loss, getting your weight in balance for the long term, and living a healthy life. The author lost 40 lbs through this plan. But more importantly, as he says, he kept the weight off, the thing most of us fail to do over and over again. The plan emphasizes the overall goal of changing your food plan, not dieting which never seems to work. The plan emphasizes investing in your calories as you would in a financial plan.

Human Security describes the steps organizations should take to protect their networks from intruders, emphasizing what employees can do to defend their network. The points are crisp, simple, and eminently doable with a CEO or board chairperson's support. A must listen for organization IT and leaders.

Mark Twain's marvelous short work relating how to tell a story - an American story that is humorous, not comic as the British or witty as the French. The work also includes four marvelous but little-known essays: "The Wounded Soldier", "The Golden Arm", "Mental Telegraphy", and "The Invalid's Story". Canadian listeners will particularly enjoy "Mental Telegraphy", set in Quebec.

A story that has a version of Uriah Heap, a story within a story, touching on the themes of death and deliverance, anger and revenge. This is a classic short story well worth introducing to young listeners to before they embark on the longer voyage of Dickens' novels. Dickens employs wonderful character names here, such as Mr. Heap and here Mr. Slinkton. Cathartic and uplifting. (American accent narration.)

The core foundation is about respecting and understanding them, not you, and learning strategies about how to focus upon their needs and therefore make them receptive to your thoughts because you are trying to get in alignment with theirs. A classic win/win approach that works.

"To Be Read at Dusk" is one of Dickens better ghost/phantasm stories, complete with disappearances and people lost forever through other worldly influences or death. A story within a story told by couriers, go-betweens in the age of Dickens.

Shape of the States starts with the shape of the whole United States, then the 13 colonies, the four acquired states, and the 33 ones Congress created. Each state's borders is discussed within a regional context with states next to them and discussions of common issues and specific disputes. The work demonstrates how Congress effectively worked to make these 33 relatively equal in size. It shows the actions Presidents took to negotiate, acquire, and fight for certain properties to augment the states.

"A Dark Brown Dog" is an unexpected Stephen Crane jewel. Crane is best known for three short stories, "The Open Boat", thought by many to be the best short story ever written; "The Blue Hotel"; and "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky". "A Dark Brown Dog" is the first cousin of Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, in being set in the rough, tough world of the New York Bowery of the late 19th century.

A story that blends practical joking with death; the irony of the Devil's Dictionary is a live and well in this story. A jewel.

Before McDonald's and Holiday Inn, Jack was on the road with his friends, when interstate highways were a novelty and going coast to coast was just for fun. Jack was pre-Vietnam, more 1950s edgy than 1960s politically correct. He loved Keats and Eliot as he sang the praises of the Odes and "The Wasteland", bars and saloons, writers and barkeeps - all about equally, according to the author, who narrates about his short time with Jack on the road.

Alexander's Bridge was Willa Cather's first novel and one of her best. Bartley Alexander was the world's leading bridge builder, something that was considered an awesome skill in the early 20th century. Alexander has the strength and regret that weave throughout Cather's male characters much as they do through those of her contemporary authors, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Dreiser, Anderson, Lewis, and others.

Ambrose Bierce's "One Kind of Officer" is a story of the heartache of orders given without discretion in the field. Like so many of his Civil War stories, it is a thoughtful look at the problems facing soldiers during wartime. An abuse of power leads to a needless death in this classic American tale.

"A Christmas Dinner" is a perfect demonstration of Dickens' attitude towards the redemptive power of Christmas and the Christmas spirit. This is a lovely short story well worth listening to alongside his more famous writings about the holidays.

When George hears his mother is sick, he comes home immediately despite looking uncool to his rowdy friends, and soothes his mother. He shows his deep caring for her which moves her as well. Critics have spoken about George's being a drunk, an alcoholic, and the like. But that is not core to the story because George keeps his job for a long time; when he loses it, much of that is because he has been led into thinking work is not cool, to use the modern term.

Considered one of the great American short stories; Kurt Vonnegut said it was the best. Set in the Civil War with a Southwestern humor twist worthy of Mark Twain, but much grimmer. The story of betrayal as a Northern Scout in the Civil War lures a planter to blow up a bridge so he can be caught and hanged. Short, concise, worthy.

A must listen for couples more than 15 years apart in age. Best to listen prior to marriage but important to read if a marriage sours. Sam Margulies, who has mediated 4,000 divorces has found this group having specially identifiable issues that can be dealt with productively and fairly. The younger spouse, generally a woman, grows up during the marriage and seeks an equality not there in the beginning. The older, generally richer spouse, bargained for this kind of relationship and must now decide whether to change the status of the younger party or move on.
