The quiet Dutch community of Sleepy Hollow lay in the Adirondack mountains on the western shore of the mighty Hudson River in America’s colonial period. The solitude of the woods was breathtaking, and not even a schoolmaster was immune from the eerie miasma which everyone knew permeated the dense forest. Written in 1820, Washington Irving’s The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow has become a classic of American literature, and has been retold in many different ways. Here is the original, from Irving’s own hand. (Summary by Chip)

In this series we listen to short stories that are NOT by perhaps the most well-known author of this type. But the many other rich talents in the volume may have treated the subject matter a little differently, or were perhaps just overlooked in the stampede to applaud the winner, but these authors are of equal merit. Each of their works is laden with talent, has purpose, and is rich and textured in this gloried niche of literature.

Included. The Apparition Of Mrs. Veal by Daniel Defoe,. Alice Addertongue by Benjamin Franklin,. The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving,. Prosper Mérimée by Mateo Falcone,. Napoleon And The Spectre by Charlotte Bronte,. The Mortal Immortal by Mary Shelley,. Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne,. Dr. Heidegger's Experiment by Nathaniel Hawthorne,. Overcoat by Nikolai Gogol,. The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allan Poe,. The Cask Of Amontillado by Edgar Allan Poe,. An Honest Thief by Fyodor Dostoyevsky,. Frog by Edgar Allan Poe,. The Knitted Collar by Mary Anne Hoare.

When Ichabod Crane sets his sights on the beautiful Katrina van Tassel (and her father's large estate), he's determined that nothing will stand in his way - not even brawny Brom Bones, his love rival. Ichabod is many things: a stern school teacher, a confident singer, an eligible bachelor. One thing he is NOT is brave, and there is far more to fear in Sleepy Hollow than Brom Bones. Especially at night... Washington Irving's atmospheric masterpiece of early New England and the fabled Headless Horseman has thrilled and inspired generations.
