Arthur Ransome is best known for his Swallows and Amazons series of children’s books. This is the only example of his fiction in the public domain. These stories are all from Russian folklore, some comparatively well-known, others less so. Ransome spent some years in Russia as a newspaper correspondent for the Daily News and the Manchester Guardian and was peripherally involved in the revolution. In the late twenties he married Evgenia Shvelpina, Trotsky's secretary, retired from newspapers and started writing his children’s books. (Summary by AJM)

Ze začátku se nic nedaří podle plánu. Amazonky nemohou tábořit na ostrově Divokých koček, protože na návštěvu přijela prateta a tak místo dobrodružných pirátských výprav musí být nastrojené ve svátečních šatech. A aby toho nebylo málo, Vlaštovky nešťastně ztroskotají a přijdou tak o svou loď. Žádná nesnáz ale nemůže porazit děti s fantazií a odhodláním.

Třetí kniha ze série o Vlaštovkách a Amazonkách se odehrává na moři, kam děti vypluly s Petrem Kachnou hledat poklad. Odolají pronásledujícím pirátům? "Petr Kachna" je třetí díl románového cyklu o prázdninových dobrodružstvích dvou dětských sourozeneckých skupin, které si říkají Vlaštovky a Amazonky. Jedna z Vlaštovek Titty Walkerová si během minulých prázdnin stvořila ve své fantazii vysloužilého námořníka Petra Kachnu, který v této knize ožívá. A proč ne? Společně vyplouvají se strýčkem Jimem alias kapitánem Flintem ve škuneru Divoká kočka na moře, protože Petr Kachna ví, kde je uložen poklad.

Arthur Ransome brilliantly wrote about Oscar Wilde in A Critical Study, published in 1912, and then went on to write the popular and better known children's series, Swallows and Amazons, in 1930. Ransome considers Oscar Wilde a visionary of whom every classical scholar must know. Oscar Wilde changed the culture of his own day and, by doing so, changed ours. Wilde tried various literary activities, poetry, drama, dialogues and essays, a novel, and even wrote about interior decoration. To him, art was supreme, and he pursued that ideal in every expression that he encountered.

In 1913, Arthur Ransome traveled to Russia to explore Russian folklore. The result of his studies was the publication of retellings (rather than translations) of a number of stories, including The Soldier and Death, which first appeared in 1920.
