Sigmund Freud publicó en 1930 "El malestar en la cultura", el segundo tratado completo de Freud sobre teoría cultural, junto con su obra de 1921 "Psicología de las masas y análisis del yo". En ella, Freud describe el conflicto entre el individuo con su impulso de satisfacer sus pulsiones y la sociedad, que presiona constantemente para contener estas pulsiones. La obra es uno de los escritos de crítica cultural más influyentes del siglo XX y es relevante en términos psicológicos y sociológicos.
