Nat Love, the son of enslaved parents, was born in 1854 on a plantation in Davidson County, Tennessee. In February 1869, Love left Tennessee and found work as a cowboy, first in the Texas panhandle, then in Arizona. Love's story, The Life and Adventures of Nat Love, was published in 1907, and it is considered the only full-length autobiography by an African-American cowhand.

In 1856-57 Frederick Law Olmsted took a saddle trip through Texas to see the area and report on its lands and peoples. His description of the Lone Star State is one of the most outstanding books about the American West ever published. David Bennett Hill was an American politician and renowned orator. During Hill’s illustrious political career he served as a US State Senator and the Governor of New York. Hill delivered his "I Am a Democrat and Not a Revolutionist" speech, what is now considered his most famous speech, at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on the 9th of July 1896. The speech took place in the heat of voracious debate regarding the value of silver in the US at the time and its vast ramifications from a political, economic, and public standpoint.

The chronicle of Theodore Adolphus “Dot” Babb is a factual and fascinating account of his and his younger sister’s 1865 capture by a Comanche band near what is today Decatur, Texas. They were taken to an area in what became the state of Oklahoma and adopted into the tribe, where Babb observed all facets of the tribe’s customs and participated in activities like horse taming, until both children were ransomed by their father in 1867. Babb kept in contact with the tribe and the next decade the family lived with the Comanche for a year before settling in Wichita Falls.
