When the US entered World War I in April 1917, America’s sailors were immediately forced to engage in the utterly new realm of anti-submarine warfare waged on, below and above the seas by a variety of small ships and the new technology of air power. The US Navy substantially contributed to the safe trans-Atlantic passage of a two million man Army that decisively turned the tide of battle on the Western Front even as its battleship division helped the Royal Navy dominate the North Sea.

Agli inizi del Novecento gli artisti dell'avanguardia europea detestavano la lunga pace del continente: trent'anni senza una grande guerra o una grande rivoluzione. Nella loro arte auspicavano, profetizzavano, invocavano un evento rigeneratore per l'avvento di un uomo nuovo. Fra visioni di catastrofi e profezie di rinascita, anticiparono l'apocalisse della modernità. E quando la Grande Guerra esplose davvero, vi si gettarono con entusiasmo. La loro arte scoprì l'orrore della carneficina di massa.

4 novembre 1918: l'Italia è in tripudio. Rispetto al 1915 il contesto internazionale è però cambiato: gli interessi italiani si scontrano con quelli di alleati mai amici e il peso reale del nostro Paese non è assolutamente pari alle iniziali ambizioni. Prenderne atto è doloroso per la pubblica opinione e devastante per le istituzioni. La pace, alla fine, arriverà ed anche a buone condizioni; ma oramai lo stato liberale è entrato in agonia.

Infidi o lealisti? Austriacanti o patrioti? Quale è stato il destino delle centinaia di migliaia di cittadini dell'impero asburgico che erano e si consideravano italiani per lingua e per cultura? Strattonati da un lato dalla propaganda irredentista e dall'altro influenzati dalla tradizionale cultura dell'obbedienza alle regole, nell'estate del 1914 hanno risposto in larga parte al richiamo della mobilitazione. Inghiottiti dal vortice delle prime sconfitte dell'esercito austro-ungarico, la loro identità nazionale sarà poi messa a dura prova.

La guerra è finita. L'Impero ha perso un milione di uomini, Vienna è divenuta la capitale di un territorio dieci volte più piccolo e una monarchia quasi millenaria ha cessato per sempre di esistere. Le clausole imposte dai vincitori, tuttavia, lungi dallo stabilire una pace equa e duratura, contribuiranno ad alimentare un'instabilità politica ed economica destinata a travolgere rovinosamente l'Europa nel breve arco di due decenni.

Trincee, gallerie, camminamenti e vie ferrate. La Grande Guerra pone fine alla tradizionale battaglia in campo aperto che per millenni aveva caratterizzato la strategia militare. In un simile contesto la montagna diventa protagonista assoluta: nel suo ventre è disegnata la frontiera, nel suo ventre bisogna innanzitutto pensare a sopravvivere; su pareti a picco e con inverni a trenta gradi sotto zero, l'alba del nuovo giorno è già una vittoria.

La guerra mise fine alla prima globalizzazione: fu davvero una belle époque? Nessuno aveva previsto una guerra tanto lunga e costosa. Quanto costosa? In che modo fu finanziata e con quali effetti nel Dopoguerra? Chi pagò davvero per la guerra? La guerra economica non ebbe vincitori ma solo vinti, perché? Domande alle quali è utile cercare una risposta per capire perché fu necessario attendere il 1951 per avere una vera pace in Europa.

"Internazionalismo", "classe", "nazione"... E poi ancora "irredentismo", "Risorgimento", "patria"... I miti - forse mai come in questo periodo - giungono al capolinea per poi subitaneamente ripartire in direzione opposta. Un'apocalisse in cui l'intransigenza si oppone ad improvvisi cedimenti, il clericalismo più rigido lascia spazio alla più intransigente laicità. Una congerie di sentimenti e di ragioni che disegna una nuova geografia del pensiero.

A Caporetto vincono i tedeschi e non gli austriaci, in una battaglia per loro del tutto secondaria e su un fronte privo di qualunque importanza strategica. Analizzare come e perché l'offensiva venne decisa, progettata e realizzata consente di gettare uno sguardo in profondità sui fallimenti dell'esercito italiano; consente altresì di considerare l'organizzazione di un'istituzione, l'esercito tedesco, che sarà di lì a poco nuovamente tragica protagonista della nostra storia.

Il pifferaio magico invita alla guerra. La maggioranza silenziosa dei neutralisti resta incapace di farsi valere davanti al baccano degli interventisti. Come mai prima nella storia, la propaganda mostra la sua forza nel persuadere ma anche nel confondere e nel rimestare in sentimenti e credo diversissimi. Arriveranno i campi di battaglia e lì si incrineranno certezze e ideali di libertà e di democrazia, lì germoglieranno i semi del totalitarismo.
